Chapter 23
Cage watched a smile bloom across Carolineâs face. She looked so pleased with herself, as though she had just solved all his problems. âWhy would I agree to this? Grace is my sister, and I can take care of her. I always have.â
That was a lie. Hadnât he run when his stepmother insisted? Hadnât he left them behind with that monster? Cage shut down the guilt that clawed and threatened to send him spiraling into the past. âTell me where she is, and weâll be out of your hair.â
Carolineâs brow furrowed. She stared at him for a long moment. âDonât you see, no one has to know about Graceâs recent circumstances. With my familyâs backing, she could be introduced into society. We could say she has been secluded at your estate but now is old enough to come out. She could make an advantageousââ
âDuchess, stop.â He held up a hand. âNot everyone wants to be presented into society. Grace has been through far more than you could ever fathom. She is not some project for you to use to fill your days. We donât need your help.â
âThatâs not what I am doing,â she said hotly.
What had he been thinking, getting involved in Carolineâs life? He should have told her brother her plan to infiltrate the bacchanal and had him lock her in her room. But then he wouldnât have found Grace. Carolineâs scheme had put him at that party, and for that, Cage owed her a debt.
Of course, she would insert herself where she wasnât needed. Just like she had gone and pulled that girl from the brothel and how she had decided to expose the dark side of gentlemanâs entertainments to all of polite society. Caroline had no boundaries when it came to doing whatever she saw fit. He admired that about her. That is, until she turned her focus on him.
Caroline frowned up at him. âAnd stop calling me duchess. It makes no sense, and I donât appreciate your tone, Lord Wrotham.â
âI donât want to get wrapped up in another one of your schemes, Lady Caroline.â He crossed his arms on his chest. This was a crazy idea. He didnât need to get further involved with Caroline Langdon. She was far too tempting with her clever wit and piercing blue eyes. He was no fool. He had years of practice listening to his instincts when they warned of danger.
He repeated, âWhere is Grace?â
âShe is safe. She is staying with Williamâs sister.â Caroline rose and came to stand in front of him. She tilted her head to one side. âMorgan, last night, I was lying in bed thinking about what a conundrum you are.â
She thought of him while she lay in bed? He couldnât keep from grinning at the possibilities involved in that scenario. âReallyâ¦tell me all about what you were thinking.â
Her cheeks turned a fetching pink. âWhat I meant is that I remembered you from when Vivian was kidnapped. You were in the room that day with Lord Winters and Jack.
