Twenty minutes later, the four of us were gathered in the Trioâs living room.
âDid you tell Julia and Alison?â Callie asked. She was sitting cross-legged on the floor. We all had our phones on extra loud and in front of us so that there wasnât even a chance of us missing a call or text about Mr. Conner.
âI texted them,â Heather said. âI didnât want them hearing misinformation and freaking out.â
âWere they upset?â Brit asked. She and I were sitting on the couch.
Heather nodded. âThey were. They both told me to BBM them the second we hear something. Theyâre going to tell other riders as they see them in class.â
âThatâs a good idea,â I said. âItâs hard to hear, but Iâd want to know from friends instead of hearing gossip and being shocked.â
We were all quiet for several minutes. No one wanted to watch TV or read or do anything. None of us could concentrate.
âSo this is what it took,â Callie said. She shook her head. âI canât believe it took a serious accident for us to sit in a room and talk. Iâm sorry.â
âMe too,â I said. âIt never should have come to this. Weâre a team and we havenât been acting like it at all. Iâm sorry, too.â
Brit looked around at all of us. âIâm with Sasha. I made a lot of mistakes, and Iâm not going to repeat them. Iâm completely with this team.â
From her spot on the recliner, Heather nodded. âI might have been a little immature about some stuff.â
I looked at her. Heather had changed. The old Heather Fox would have ripped into us and not admitted to doing anything wrong. But it had actually been Heather whoâd been the main force in pulling our team together and talking us into how important it was to be a team.
âAll we can do now is be better in the future,â I said. âThereâs no reason to beat ourselves up for what weâve done.â
Callie glanced at me. âSashaâs right. Mr. Connerâs accident canât be for nothing. We have to take something away from it, and I think we got a message heâd be proud of.â
We sat still, absorbing Callieâs words.
âHey,â Brit said, her tone light. âSomeone has a birthday tomorrow.â
Heather sighed. âDonât remind me. Iâve been trying to forget about it. That means my mother will be invading campus tomorrow and throwing me a party I donât want.â
Brit and I exchanged quick looks. Heather had no idea that weâd been working over BBM with Julia and Alison to still plan the movie-themed party she wanted. It was happening as a surprise after her momâs party.
âThe night might be better than you think,â I said, trying to cheer Heather up without giving away anything.
Heatherâs phone went off with a shrill ring. She almost fell out of her seat as she snatched it from the table.
âHello?â
She listened nodding. âOkay. Uh-huh.â
âIs it about Mr. Conner?â I whispered.
She shot me a look, then nodded her head yes.
âThanks for calling. And weâll definitely ride cross-country with you this afternoon if thatâs what Mr.
