“Whew.” Dan collapsed onto the couch. “I’m glad that’s over.”

“Actually—” Faith scraped leftover potato salad and baked beans from a plate into the plastic garbage bag “—it wasn’t so bad.”

In fact, the evening had wildly surpassed her admittedly low expectations. The couples had all seemed genuinely glad to meet her and had welcomed her into their close-knit group with open arms. Her only regret had been in turning down their repeated offers to get together again.

She’d be leaving soon, she’d told them. But even if she weren’t planning to head out on the open road the minute her cycle was fixed, it would never work. Dan Whitman and Faith Richards would never be a couple, no matter how much Marjorie and Aunt Dora plotted.

Faith plopped down next to Dan, suddenly exhausted. “That Marjorie is really something, isn’t she?”

“She didn’t mean to make you feel bad about the Harley,” Dan said quietly.

Faith glanced down at her lap and picked at a stray piece of lint. “I know she didn’t.”

Dan leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. “I’m surprised you never mentioned it was your uncle’s bike and not yours.”

Faith rubbed the bridge of her nose and tried to remember why she’d never told him.

“Faith.” Dan’s eyes were dark and probing in the soft lamplight. “Why was it such a big secret?”

“I guess it never came up?”

“Try again.”

“I don’t know why, Dan.” She blew out a weary breath. “Let’s just drop it. I’ll be gone soon, and I’m beginning to think the less involved we are in each other’s lives, the better.”

“Less involved?” Dan said in a light tone. “Marjorie’s already planning the wedding.”

He’d meant the words to be teasing. But the minute they popped out and his gaze met hers, his smile faded.

Faith drew her tongue over her suddenly dry lips. “Yeah, she said pretty much the same thing to me. Crazy, huh?”

Dan leaned back against the couch and slowly turned his head to her. “Yeah, crazy.”

Their gazes locked and their breathing came in unison. Faith’s palms grew damp. She stood and reached for the garbage sack, the movement breaking the spell. “Why don’t you go to bed? I’ll finish up.”

“You’re not cleaning up this mess. I am.” Dan took the plastic bag from her hands. “You go to bed. I’m just going to sit here a few minutes and see if I can get rid of this headache.”

For the first time, Faith noticed the lines of strain around his eyes. The night had taken its toll.

Without saying a word, she headed into the kitchen and returned moments later with a glass of water and two aspirin.

“Take these.”

“Are you pushing pills again?” Dan said with a weak smile. “Or is it just my imagination?”

Faith chuckled, remembering his reluctance to take anything after his ankle injury. “It’s just your imagination.”

“In that case…” Dan took the pills from her hand, popped them in his mouth and washed them down with a long drink of the water.

He straightened upright and winced.

Faith’s narrowed her gaze.
