Winifred

I had planned to attend tonight's celebration alone. I certainly didn't want to show up with a date that would rub the man who held my heart the wrong way. That being said, I also wanted to desperately put everything behind me, so I could begin focusing on my future.

When Lord Hector Colon showed up to escort me without my knowledge, I almost declined his offer. Found it rather presumptuous of him to assume I would not have an escort and therefore required one. My father encouraged me to let the man do his best to prove himself. So, against my better judgment, I obliged both men and joined him for the evening.

My father heard how awful my previous evening had ended and didn't seem at all surprised about it. He accepted my decision that Lord Ernest Rupert and I were not going to work. Didn't raise a stink about me not giving the man a second chance, but instead agreed that I hadn't written him off before he had the chance to ruin it all by himself.

It made me wonder if perhaps the accident had truly given him a new perspective on life, or if he was simply playing some sort of game with me. Since returning, I hadn't seen the man he once was, had only been witness to the man he seemed to be now. I was still skeptical about such a drastic transformation, although I have heard about how traumatic events often bring on an entirely new perspective, changing a person's view on life. I hope that is the case where my father is concerned.

We enter the palace and join the long line of guests where King Antonio and Madam Larkin are expected to receive us. I still have to chuckle when I think about how the King first introduced his new woman to my sister, why she possessed a title above hers. Not that the future queen allowed him to use that title, she insisted everyone refer to her as Miss, but that didn't stop most of the kingdom from using the once declared title out of respect for their King.

As we get closer, I am surprised to discover the King standing there with his mother instead of his fiancée. Several murmurs are traveling down the line, about how is it obvious that a common woman such as her has no knowledge of how important it is to properly receive her guests, giving those who wish to discredit her more firepower.

Hector happens to be one of those complaining. "This is why it is important to maintain protocol in these matters. A woman such as her has no idea what it means to hold such an important title. There should be a law erected to prevent this kind of behavior. He should have chosen a woman that was more suitable for the title and role. There are plenty of lovely acceptable Ladies, willing to accept such an offer."

"Wow. Just... wow." I have no words at the moment.
