Chapter 8
Joshua was beginning to lose his mind. He hated not having his mood controlled, and not getting a hold of Melanie was setting him on edge. Her call had come in at a bad time. The due-diligence team had overlooked some red flags, and a $17.3 million deal was almost slipping through their fingers. The team was brainstorming how to salvage the situation without placing blames, and they were in the heat of things. He was one of the responsible project managers, so technically, his ass was on the line. Melanie usually sent him a message if he didnât pick up her call, but she had kept calling so he excused himself and rushed out in a panic to speak with her. He had expected there was an emergency and was shocked to hear her ask if being with her had been a bet with Malik.
âWhat?â
âWas I a bet you won?â she repeated.
âBabe, I canât do this right now.â
âItâs a simple yes or no, Joshua Doyle. Was I bet you made with Malik?â
âI canât believe youâd even ask me that! Seriously?â
âWell, I am,â she choked through her tears.
âMel, I really have to go,â heâd responded angrily, and then he had hung up.
He had called her several times since he left the office and left about five voice mails asking her to get back to him. She was not at the diner nor her house, and it was not a school day. He had also tried Bradley but got his voice mail too. He wasnât the type to barge in on people, so he refrained from going to meet Abigail at her workplace. He had wanted to be good with Melanie first before facing Malik, but he needed to let off some steam, so he drove to Malikâs place. He wanted to see him rather than talk over the phone, and he was glad to see his red 2012 Lamborghini Aventador parked in its spot. Malik called it âThe chick magnet,â and he was right. A good-looking, financially stable man in a good-looking financially stable ride always did the trick for him.
Joshua buzzed his apartment, but it went unanswered. Thinking Malik was probably at the gym or pool, he went around to the entrance and told the receptionist at the lobby that he was an expected guest of Malikâs. Joshua found him getting out of the shared pool, about to grab a towel, and walked up to him as calmly as he could. He was brought up to not wear his emotions on his sleeves.
âHey, man, I did not hear myââ Malik was cut off by a hard blow to his left jaw that sent him crashing back into the pool. He was sure he may have needed a stitch if the towel had not been over his head to cushion the punch a bit, but he definitely needed an Advil right away. Malik stepped out of the pool again carefully and sat by the pool chair rubbing his jaw.
