It was almost noon when the city of Baja came into view. Seated on one of the deck’s benches, Stephan rose and walked toward the bow, letting his eyes take in the skyline of Baja. He would stay there long enough to make an attempt to beg some food from someone. Then he would begin his seventy-mile trek to Szeged.

A deep loneliness gripped him as he thought about starting life all over again without his family.

Soon the boat veered from the center of the wide Danube River and angled toward the docks. The crewmen were readying themselves for the task of unloading the freight.

Stephan’s stomach was an empty pit in his middle. He had been to Baja on several occasions and knew the city well. He decided to walk into the business district and see if a fruit merchant might take pity on him and give him something to eat.

When the boat was secured to the dock, Stephan thanked the captain for letting him travel on his boat and walked down the gangplank. He moved quickly from the docks and made his way to Baja’s main street. As he headed for the business district, he came to a spot on Baja’s east side where the street intersected with the road that led to Szeged. A sign on a pole had an arrow painted on it, pointing east. Below the arrow, the sign said: Szeged, 112.63 kilometers. It was seventy miles.

He paused for a moment and looked eastward along the Szeged Road. He saw wagons and buggies moving both directions on the road and thought that certainly he would be able to get rides along the way, which would prevent him from having to walk the entire distance.

As he moved on toward the business section, Stephan’s attention was drawn to dark clouds that were gathering in the western sky. Well, he thought, snow season is over in Hungary. This is the last week of March. The clouds are definitely darker than snow clouds. It looks like a good rain is in the offing. I sure hope the storm will not last long. As soon as I find something to eat, I must get on the road.
