Chapter 12

Mia

I felt my heart sink. It had been one thing to know that there was a potential problem, but quite another entirely to have definitive proof now that someone was stealing from us.

I couldn’t believe this was happening. Why the hell couldn’t I just have a relatively calm first year as manager?

It felt like ever since Lucas had come into my life and ran into my car—which is how I remembered it—the hits had literally just kept on coming.

Lucas continued. “So I think we need to start by coming up with a list of suspects,” he said. “We’ll need to consider everyone in the vineyard, no matter what we assume we know about them.”

Instantly, a wave of reluctance washed over me. I didn’t want to suspect anyone, but I knew Lucas was right.

“But we have to be careful. We can’t just go off and accuse anyone without evidence. These people are supposed to trust me as their leader.”

“I get it,” he said. “We’ll need to be thorough. But Mia, dealing with tough situations is what a leader does. And if we ignore it, things might escalate. Then we could all be without jobs.”

I knew he was right, even though part of me hated to admit it.

“Are you honestly sure about all of this?” I asked him, my voice laced with concern.

He nodded, his expression serious. “Yes, I’m sure. Though I wish I weren’t.”

I sighed, feeling completely overwhelmed. We had so much on our plates already with the vineyard retreat and the upcoming Fuller Spirit launch. Now this problem seemed to be growing from a simple accounting error to the crime of the century.

And I had no idea how I would handle it if someone I trusted was behind all of this.

“Okay,” I said, taking a deep breath. “Let’s start by going through the earlier records and see if we can spot any patterns.”

Lucas nodded, his eyes gleaming with determination. “You got it,” he said. “We’ll sort this out. It’ll be ok.”

I bit my lip and nodded. I didn’t know how anything would ever feel ok again, but his reassurance was comforting.

“Want to come by my room later? We can start going through the ledgers in private. I think doing so out in the open in the main office might raise suspicion.”

I hesitated for a moment, warning bells already going off in my head. After everything that had already happened between us, I wasn’t sure I could trust myself to be alone with him. But I also knew that we needed time to go through everything, and it had to be a place where we wouldn’t be spotted. I sighed.

“Sure. When were you thinking?”

“How about in an hour?” Lucas suggested.

I nodded. “Okay, I’ll be there.”
