New computers come with UEFI instead of the traditional and old BIOS. Yeah, I know. More abbreviations. So I’ll just mention them in brief.

BIOS or UEFI is the first software that executes when a computer is switched on. It checks the hardware and then looks for the bootloader ( it’s from here that your OS, sitting in that treacherous 'C drive', boots up.)

UEFI- Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. Uses GPT. Newer, faster, supports large hard disk sizes.

BIOS – Basic Input-Output system. Very old, does not support disks above sizes of 2.1 Terabytes. It works only with the MBR partitioning style.

NOTE: Many computers come with UEFI which also supports BIOS. These hybrid kind of systems are getting fewer and fewer, but they do exist. In these computers you can install an OS for any one type.

Phew.. glad we got that out of the way. So, where were we? Yup, the whole point of the above information was to download the correct OS image for your installation. For example, you will find it pretty hard to find an image of Windows XP or windows 7 that works in a UEFI enabled system, because when Windows 7 was released, most computers used BIOS.

Now, you need to download the .iso file from the respective websites of the Linux distro for free or buy the installation media online. Make sure you get the correct one.
