4.5 Properties of Reactions

o far, we have focused on quantitative aspects of chemical reactions – the regrouping of elements from the reactants to the products, and how to balance chemical equations with coefficients. We will now consider some qualitative properties of chemical reactions.

When a chemical reaction occurs, there is a change in chemical identity in the substances. The products are chemically different from the reactants. If you could look microscopically at the molecules of the reactants and products, you would see this change in chemical configuration. For example, in the synthesis of water, 2 H2 + O2 --> 2 H2O, initially you would see pairs of hydrogen (H) atoms bound together (H2) and pairs of oxygen (O) atoms bound together (O2), and later you would see water molecules with 2 H atoms and 1 O atom bound together. That is, you would see different chemical bonds in the reactants and products.
