Chapter 14
I drove to the precinct in shock. Had I been dreaming? Had my lack of sleep and the trauma from last night brought on a psychotic break? I parked, still unsure what the answers were and went inside.
The guys at the desk didnât tease me today, even though I had on a tighter outfit than the one I wore yesterday, including short biker shorts and a light blue tank.
No one was in a joking mood today, though. After what we found last night in that tomb of dead bodies, it was understandable.
I entered the war room and paused at all of the activity. The room buzzed. I hadnât seen so much going on⦠since ever. But the Eerie Valley PD had never had a case like the one last night. It looked as though everyone had six jobs to do.
Before I could ask if anyone needed help, Steve cut me off. âThe Chief, Faith, right away. Heâs waiting.â
I went to his door and knocked. Second day in a row. This was becoming a thing and I didnât like it.
âEnter,â the Chief hollered.
Inside, Chief Collins was pacing behind his chair while speaking on the phone. When he noticed me, he waved me into a seat.
âSchedule it for the six oâclock news. We should have enough information.â Then, after a pause, âVery good. Appreciate it.â He hung up and fell in his black leather chair. âHow you holding up, Faith?â
âFine, sir.â I couldnât meet his gaze as thoughts of the honeycomb full of paranormal creatures and Aaron with his white wings, not to mention his volunteering me to save the supernatural world filled my mind. It was crazy.
âThought you might like to know the murdered stripperâs parents showed up.â He steepled his fingers and leaned forward on his desk.
I sat in the chair opposite him. âHave you spoken to them?â
âI have. They are surprised, to put it mildly. The last time they heard from her, she was still at college in Idaho. Theyâd been worried sick she wasnât returning their calls. I went with them to ID the body. They are leaving in a few days, once weâre finished, and taking her back to Idaho with them.â
I nodded, remembering how my parents looked in their caskets at their funeral. Itâd been like looking at wax figures. I rubbed my hands together. Between the dead bodies in the underground tomb, all the bones, the murders, and my own personal drama, I was barely holding my shiz together.
âYou going to another class this morning?â He indicated my outfit.
âI planned on it, but I can skip if you need help around here.â I focused on my fingernails. âYou look tired,â I added quietly.
He swallowed loudly. âNo sleep will do that to a person.â
âYeah,â I said, noticing his hazel eyes were bloodshot.
âYou donât look much better. Get any sleep after last night?â He leaned back in his chair.
âA little.â
âGood.â He sighed again. âThe woman you discovered on the side of the road?â
I hadnât forgotten about her, but well, I sort of had.
