The bear reared up on his back two feet, yowling loudly before it fell back to all fours and charged toward me.

I heard Scarlett squeak behind me. I had to keep her safe. I could handle the bear; she would be mauled for sure. I shoved the backpack off my shoulders, letting it fall to the ground. Then I lunged forward, triggering my change, and landed on all four feet in my lion form.

I charged the bear as I roared. The bear chuffed, not slowing at all. We collided with a thump hard enough to make me wheeze. I drove him backward, using my broad shoulders.

The bear angled its head, trying to bite me. One of its paws beat on my back like it was trying to hit me. I ducked and continued to push into him, hoping I could get him to back off without hurting him. His feet slid as they met uneven ground. I let up long enough to growl. My throat vibrated, and I glared at the animal.

It made a sound in the back of its throat. I hissed. My lip curled up. I dropped down to my belly, wiggling my bottom like I was getting ready to pounce. The bear paused, watching me.

A gun shot clapped, echoing off the rock walls. The bear chuffed and then backed away a few feet before turning and darting away.

Another shot rang out, making me duck. I narrowed my eyes and looked to the east; in the direction I thought the shots were coming from.

Scarlett ran up beside me with the backpack slung over her arm and looked over her shoulder. “That sounds close. I don’t think they are shooting in this direction, but we should move.”

I meowed in agreement and extended a paw toward her, hoping she would take the hint to lead the way. She nodded and set a steady pace through the trees. She was right. The shots weren’t in our general direction from what I could tell, but I wasn’t going to sit around here either.

I kept an eye on our surroundings and on her. It was clear that I didn’t need to worry about her falling. She was agile and sure with each step she took. Her toned body moved gracefully through the woods, never missing a step.

Scarlett was marvelous. A true beauty and smart. She had a no-nonsense attitude, the kind of person that could and would do things herself.

She was my mate. I couldn’t believe that I’d had the good fortune to find her. Some shifters went their whole lives and never found their one true love.

I still couldn’t believe I’d almost screwed any chance with her up.

I shook the thoughts away. If I didn’t stop staring at her, I would be the one face planting. I needed to pay attention.

My eyes narrowed and my ears twitched as I shifted my focus.

Voices caught my ear, and I surged forward, bumping Scarlett’s hand with the tip of my nose. She slowed and turned back to me; her eyes were wide.
