The sleek contours inside and out of Darcy’s Coupe de Ville were as sexy as he was, particularly when that brooding expression was back in place. Strangely, Elizabeth found his hard-boiled look extremely attractive. Seated beside him on the front seat, she attempted to control the inappropriately timed wanderings of her mind and suppress the visceral reaction of her body recalling his touch only an hour before. She glanced over at him behind the wheel; those same strong hands gripping the leather had clutched her backside when she sat upon him, rocking toward orgasm. She couldn’t help the slight sigh that escaped her lips. Their intimacies were just as she had always dreamed her lover would perform, but with Darcy, it was so much more. Not only was he tender and attentive to her needs inside the bedroom, but outside, he listened and joked and was a surprising conversationalist. This man was everything she hoped for and she was in love.

Freezing rain turned the Queensboro Bridge icy and the drive into Queens tense. Few cars were on the Bridge as they entered; lone sets of headlights blurred in the teaming pelts at the beginning of the East River. On the opposite side of the bridge, the vibrant red neon Silvercup Bread sign signaled the gateway to Queens from Manhattan. In the silence of the vehicle, the repetitive thump of the wiper blades sounded like the beat of a funeral drum against the glass.

Her mind wandered in the silence, morosely settling on the disturbing thought that her friend Mary never had the experience of real love. It saddened her that Mary’s death could never be solved, and she looked over to Darcy for comfort. He raised a cigarette to his lips, waves of gray smoke floated around his lips like a menacing fog. He was just as troubled as she. They were two sides of the same coin.

Elizabeth rubbed her hands together since the Cadillac’s heater did nothing to warm the chill brought on by so much more than the winter weather. She furrowed her brow, watching the passing waterscape as Darcy drove with focused control over the vehicle and metal structure. She knew his thoughts were worrisome especially when he stamped out the cigarette then reached for her hand, grasping it in his. A quick glance in her direction revealed a gentle smile of admiration.

“My fedora looks good on you,” he stated.

She touched the brim with her free hand and beamed mischievously, feeling so self-satisfied at having stolen the hat without a modicum of guilt. “Yes. It sure does. Thanks.”

Silence again. Long seconds passed until he squeezed her fingers. “They want me to run for Congress.”

“That’s what you want right?”

“Yes, but I think they have plans. My outspoken support of the House Un-American Activities Committee obviously hurts the Soviets hiding in plain sight on American soil. Perhaps they believe that Georgiana’s kidnapping could turn me.”

“It wouldn’t be the first time a government official was strong-armed.”

He squeezed her hand tighter, swearing in anguish.
