Chapter Fourteen
At six a.m., my alarm went off, rousing me from a shallow sleep. I hadnât been able to get comfortable, though not for the same reason as before. The welts had faded substantially, possibly from Micheleâs oil, so the unease had nothing to do with the physical.
Kennia emerged from the bathroom, running her hand along her hair to press it back into place after sleeping. I sidestepped her and got ready, too.
We moved with ease, gliding around one another and hardly speaking a word until something inside me snapped. Thereâd been no build-up, nothing that had led to it, but the statement flowed out of my mouth before she had the chance to reach for the doorknob.
âI had sex with Michele last night.â
She froze, mid-reach. I was horrified at whatâd Iâd done, my eyes wide in shock.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!
She faced me, her head cocked to the side while a strange expression twisted her features.
âYou plan on seeinâ him? For real, I mean.â
That had been the consequence of blurting out something that shouldâve been calmly stated.
Swallowing hard and chewing on the inside of my cheek, I shook my head.
âIâ¦â She paused. âIâmâ¦a little disappointed.â
A phantom fist slammed into my stomach.
I trusted Kenniaâs opinion when it came to relationships. She possessed an incredible talent for reading people, something I hadnât come across in anyone else. It came down to how sheâd been wired, and if she chose, she couldâve made millions as a shrink, undoubtedly being able to pinpoint and root out problems.
Thereâd never been judgment from Kennia. Disappointment, perhaps, but never judgment, and that disappointment hadnât been for my lifestyle. Kennia had always been vocal about my lack of personal connection. Sex could come from anywhere, anyone, but a true connection was hard to find. In a lot of ways, she was the only person I could talk to about sex, because it was inconsequential to her.
Until Iâd met Kennia, I, to the best of my knowledge, had never met anyone who identified as asexual and didnât have any idea what it meant. Iâd initially thought that asexuals were, for the most part, nun-like or priest-like individuals who considered sex an unsavory part of life, so they chose to ignore it. She set me straight by saying that, in spite of most depictions in media, asexual people werenât virginal idiots who knew nothing about sex and freaked out or vomited at the mere mention of it. They just didnât care about it. It wasnât a factor that played into their relationships. Kenniaâs only concern was the connection she felt toward her partner. It was deeper than sex and in a lot of ways purer, without the added complication. Whether sheâd chosen to date a man or a woman at the time, her relationships came down to how their personalities and interests fit together. That wasnât to say sheâd never had sex with her partners, but it remained far from her motivation or care.
So when she told me that she was
