RECALIBRATING THE LEADERSHIP COMPASS

To be a leader in the twenty-first century isn’t to control or avoid challenges; it’s to learn to find our footing regardless of the circumstances. It’s not a matter of bouncing back when we fall or falter. It’s about growing from the experience no matter how challenging it is in a way that allows us to be more sure-footed, yet humble. It’s about being better equipped for the next challenge and the one after that, while embracing those experiences and using them to build greater strengths and prepare for the future.

The World Economic Forum and Harvard University point out that a large number of the issues that keep business and global leaders up at night are those that affect society as a whole, ones that are both local and systemic, persistent, and with causes and cures that are hard to pinpoint such as climate change, scarcity of water and food, poverty, cyber-attacks, not to mention the world we are leaving to our children. To solve these problems requires that we depart from the status quo in ways that are particularly uncomfortable and that require us to equip ourselves with a new set of skills.

It’s no surprise, then, that many of the most successful leaders draw on a Type R mindset as a foundation for enacting a different kind of leadership that allows them to embody Transformative Resilience and contribute it to teams, communities, and the larger world. Leaders with Type R skills and behaviors increase their own abilities so that they’re healthy and effective and can model good behavior and balance the varying demands they face.

Together, this mindset and skill set also help leaders navigate the challenges of organizational cultures and internal dynamics, from crises in employee engagement to retaining talent, harnessing diversity, and aligning the organization’s values with the way it carries out its business. And, given the immense uncertainty in the world, this new way of thinking combined with increased know-how informs the way leaders conduct business and engage with the outside world. They cultivate TR as they chart a path through challenges and unforeseen shocks, whether they are related to financial crises, shifts in markets and competition, shrinking global resources, or increasing social and political tensions.

The more complex problems become, when they spread beyond the ability of a single person to solve, the more the nuanced guidance of Type R leaders is required to adapt to and prosper in changing times.
