Operation woo Hana was about to begin. Chas would not let Pace McCoy, or any man for that matter, win her over. He would give her lavish gifts, take her on spectacular dates, and spoil her the way a princess should be spoiled. He'd even get that scruff ball of hers a fancy dog collar. It wasn't merely about winning. It was about winning Hana. He didn't know what it was about her that was so entrancing, just that she was all he thought about. Her face, her voice, her laugh, the way she tilted her head when she asked a question. It was all so endearing and sweet and sexy at the same time.

Chas had never been a ladies' man. He'd had his share of dates and even a serious girlfriend a few years back, but nobody made him feel as alive as Hana. And he didn't want to spoil anybody but her.

The lunch McCoy won at the auction should have been long over. He pulled down Hana's street and spotted her little coupe in the driveway, but next to it was an older, faded truck. It had to belong to Pace. A check of the clock showed that it was well past three in the afternoon. A scowl came across his face.

Leaving the dozen roses he had gotten her in the car, Chas looked inside the front window. Movement out the backdoor caught his attention and he snuck around the side of the house. Chas peered over the fence and saw Pace throw a ball. A huge beast of a dog ran after it, Hana's little one trailing behind. He didn't see Hana right off, but he didn't want to get caught.

"I guess I need to become a dog person." Chas went back to the car, grabbed the flowers, and laid them on the front step. He backed up and nodded. "You got this."

Back in his car, he drove to the pet store. He looked through all the fancy dog accessories. The shelves were lined with collars, bows, scarves, and clothes. There was even dog nail polish.

"Can I help you find something?" A smiling teenager stood at his side.

Chas started to dismiss her, but then he stopped. "I need a gift for a dog." He felt ridiculous saying such a thing.

The girl looked confused. "Your dog?"

He scoffed. "No. It's, um, my girlfriend's. A small dog."

"How small? What kind of dog?"

What kind of dog? He had no idea. "Small. Jumps a lot. Looks like the dog from The Wizard of Oz." He nodded. Yes, that was what kind of dog it was. A Toto dog.

The awkward smile told him the girl thought he was stupid, but he didn't care. "So a small terrier. About ten to fifteen pounds?"

He nodded.

"And if it's your girlfriend's dog, you want to impress them both. I have just the things." She grabbed a basket from around the corner and started loading it up.

In went a pink satin collar with a bow. Then what Chas could only describe as a party dress followed.
