The fact that there was a sixteen-year gap in their ages gave Jenny pause and slowed things down to a simple flirtation at first, what might be called a testing of the waters between them. She found Ian breathtakingly attractive, but she wasn’t about to make a fool of herself if he had no interest in her. Besides, she had no intention of actually being unfaithful to Howard. So when Ian came to Cedar Dreams in his paint-spattered clothing, his open-necked shirt—with the sleeves rolled up most appealingly to show manly forearms—his gold chain, and his gray-flecked hair, she attended to the business of the cottage, brushing past him when the opportunity presented itself, placing a hand on his arm when she had a question. For his part, Ian took this in, knew what it meant, and considered whether, at thirty-three years old, he wanted a fling with a woman approaching her sixth decade. She was, after all, the executrix of Marion Mance’s estate, not its chief beneficiary.

So they were both cautious, although Ian McCloud was cautious about more than one thing. He was also cautious in his approach to cleaning out the detritus of Marion Mance’s past, having been schooled over the years by his father that something could turn up in the most unexpected place.

That happened, eventually, although neither Jenny nor Ian knew this at first. What they did know was that a catalog of Items of Interest had to be amassed prior to the sale of said items, and this was a catalog of some considerable length. For after the mountain of debris had been meticulously looked over and disposed of, filed, paid off, burnt, bundled up, and otherwise handled, what remained in the cottage was furniture, clothing, china, utensils, pottery, books, letters, statuary, knickknacks, coins, stamps, tools, bells, buttons, and bows…. In short, what remained was a lifetime of items with which an elderly couple had not been able to part.

“We’re lucky this place isn’t any bigger,” was Jenny’s reaction to the mass of possessions they found in every closet, under every bed and other piece of furniture, in the attic, in the basement, and outside in the two sheds on the property. “This could take forever.”

Ian said, “I don’t mind that. Do you?” and the smile he gave her told her that her flirtation had not gone unnoticed.

Neither had some very curious postage stamps.
