Chapter Nineteen
âOkay, weâll gather the evidence and have you either swing by the police station or my office later today or tomorrow.â Jake cleared his throat. âMeanwhile, Danielle asked if you two could stop by the house for a few minutes before going home. Eve was worried about Harry, and she ran into some trouble when she tried to get an eye on things here earlier today.â
âSure,â Gabe answered, giving Harry a wry smile.
Harry became sheepish. He wasnât used to anyone worrying about him.
As Gabe got ready to step into the SUV, Jakeâs glance at Harry was definitely quizzical. âJust as a matter of curiosity. When you were being shifted from place to place in the past, did you ever have any run ins with an older man with gray hair, who apparently always wears a silver suit?â
Strangely, the description sounded familiar, and Harry thought back. âYou know, maybe I did Jake. Iâll have to think on where it might have been. Iâm still kind of fuzzy when I look back at certain times in the past.â
Jake nodded, looking thoughtful. âIâm sure youâre experiencing whatâs called selective memory. Sometimes the details about your past are so horrific, you block them from your mind, so you have the strength to move forward.â
Gabe looked at Jake oddly.
Jake shrugged. âIt happened with me.â
Without saying a word, Gabe slapped Jake on the back, before stepping into the SUV behind the wheel, while Harry climbed into the passenger seat.
âIâll keep thinking about it,â Harry murmured, after rolling his window down.
âWeâre hoping to come up with a sketch you can take a look at.â Jake looked at Gabe. âLet Danny know I might be a while before I make it home today.â
âWe will,â Gabe answered.
Harry sighed, glancing through the window as they left the property.
Gabe gave him a side glance. âHowâs it going?â
He shrugged. âAlright. I felt nothing when I saw Pauline and Ed laying there dead. Is there something wrong with me?â
Gabe muttered, âLike Jake said, you have good instincts. Thereâs a reason you canât feel sympathy for people like them.â
Harry continued, âLike they donât deserve it, and thereâs probably something worse going on than what Amy and I have been seeing?â
âYouâve got it, kid,â Gabe answered, taking a left on the curve leading to Dragonfly Pointe. âStart writing down every little thing thatâs happened since you arrived in Crystal Rock. No detailâs too small. I can guess what was planned for you and Amy, and I have a feeling itâs run through your mind a time or two as well, but what we need now is proof, so you can lead us to whoever was behind it.â
Arriving at the Loughlinâs house about five minutes later, Gabe led Harry around the house and onto the patio leading to the screened in porch where Harry had left the puppies only two days earlier. It was hard to believe all the crazy things that had happened within forty-eight hours. Eve had been right â Harryâs actions had led to a strange chain of events that would have probably never happened otherwise.
