Chapter Nineteen

“Okay, we’ll gather the evidence and have you either swing by the police station or my office later today or tomorrow.” Jake cleared his throat. “Meanwhile, Danielle asked if you two could stop by the house for a few minutes before going home. Eve was worried about Harry, and she ran into some trouble when she tried to get an eye on things here earlier today.”

“Sure,” Gabe answered, giving Harry a wry smile.

Harry became sheepish. He wasn’t used to anyone worrying about him.

As Gabe got ready to step into the SUV, Jake’s glance at Harry was definitely quizzical. “Just as a matter of curiosity. When you were being shifted from place to place in the past, did you ever have any run ins with an older man with gray hair, who apparently always wears a silver suit?”

Strangely, the description sounded familiar, and Harry thought back. “You know, maybe I did Jake. I’ll have to think on where it might have been. I’m still kind of fuzzy when I look back at certain times in the past.”

Jake nodded, looking thoughtful. “I’m sure you’re experiencing what’s called selective memory. Sometimes the details about your past are so horrific, you block them from your mind, so you have the strength to move forward.”

Gabe looked at Jake oddly.

Jake shrugged. “It happened with me.”

Without saying a word, Gabe slapped Jake on the back, before stepping into the SUV behind the wheel, while Harry climbed into the passenger seat.

“I’ll keep thinking about it,” Harry murmured, after rolling his window down.

“We’re hoping to come up with a sketch you can take a look at.” Jake looked at Gabe. “Let Danny know I might be a while before I make it home today.”

“We will,” Gabe answered.

Harry sighed, glancing through the window as they left the property.

Gabe gave him a side glance. “How’s it going?”

He shrugged. “Alright. I felt nothing when I saw Pauline and Ed laying there dead. Is there something wrong with me?”

Gabe muttered, “Like Jake said, you have good instincts. There’s a reason you can’t feel sympathy for people like them.”

Harry continued, “Like they don’t deserve it, and there’s probably something worse going on than what Amy and I have been seeing?”

“You’ve got it, kid,” Gabe answered, taking a left on the curve leading to Dragonfly Pointe. “Start writing down every little thing that’s happened since you arrived in Crystal Rock. No detail’s too small. I can guess what was planned for you and Amy, and I have a feeling it’s run through your mind a time or two as well, but what we need now is proof, so you can lead us to whoever was behind it.”

Arriving at the Loughlin’s house about five minutes later, Gabe led Harry around the house and onto the patio leading to the screened in porch where Harry had left the puppies only two days earlier. It was hard to believe all the crazy things that had happened within forty-eight hours. Eve had been right – Harry’s actions had led to a strange chain of events that would have probably never happened otherwise.
