Clicking through to the profiles, I was able to identify lots of Boston residents. How? Sometimes people include their hometowns on their Twitter profiles, or they may reference people, places, or issues in their tweets that give clues to where they are located.

You can do the same thing, starting with local media and businesses and trying to identify local followers. You may not know these people, and they may not use their real names on Twitter. Nevertheless, it’s OK to follow them. They may even follow you back!
