Isaiah held the plastic shopping bag with two work glove-covered hands, staring at the stacks of bills located inside. The failing light of evening was still enough for him to conclude it certainly did look like it was close to ten grand. Glancing up at the young woman standing in front of him, he asked, “And where did you get this?”

She shifted nervously before answering, her eyes darting to and fro. Not in a guilty or lying sort of way, but more like she was about to admit something she was sure Isaiah wouldn’t believe. “I’m going to answer that,” she said, “but you need to promise me something first.”

He sized her up, wondering what story she was about to tell him. He smiled. “I’m a detective. I could promise you anything if it leads me to the truth. Just so you know, the law allows me to lie my face off while I do it. But I’ll play along. What do I need to promise?”

She crossed her arms and looked at him, seeming to weigh his answer. Finally, she shrugged. “I guess that’ll have to do. My name is Dawn Freedom. I happen to know for a fact that you pinned the murder of that poor girl in the alley on the wrong person. Thera Jacobs didn’t do it. It was someone else.” She paused again, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I know that because I have been psychically linking to the real person who not only killed that girl, but is planning to kill someone else, and I need your help to stop it.”

Right then Isaiah vowed to take up another profession. Norman, Oklahoma, had been taken over by too many whack-jobs and fruitcakes. Maybe he should go back to school and get a degree in psychiatry. The way things were going around here, he was sure it was about to be a booming business.

Before he could make up his mind on how to reply, Mrs. Harrington’s voice called from over his shoulder. “You been out there too long. Now, I said I had dinner for you, and you need to live up to your promise and get in here and eat it. Enough goofing off! And bring your girlfriend too. There’s plenty.”

Isaiah turned to face the porch. He could make out Marge’s thin silhouette in the open door. “No ma’am. She’s not my-”

He was cut off by the crazy old woman before he could finish. “I said y’all get in here. I hope your girlfriend listens better than you.”

Maybe it was being out here away from people, or his softening stance toward the crazy woman. Perhaps it had something to do with working with his hands for a change. Possibly, it had something to do with the fact that the little still voice in his head had grabbed a bullhorn and started shouting he had better listen to the young lady in front of him. Maybe it was all of it combined. No matter the reason, it overshadowed his police training.
