TAYLOR STARED AT the phone in his hand and braced himself before answering.

“Taylor, it’s Carol. Did you have any luck on the island?”

“Yes, I’m here with her now,” he responded.

“You’re still there?”

He heard the surprise in her voice. “Yes. I’m planning to be here until after the holidays.”

“Why? Wait, have you two decided to give your marriage a chance?”

“Rayne asked that we postpone the divorce until after Christmas. She just wants to focus on the holidays and family.”

“It’s her way of avoiding the things she doesn’t want to do,” Carol responded. “You should’ve figured out by now that Rayne is a runner. In all fairness, I guess she gets it from me. I don’t know what happened between you and my daughter, but I hope you two work it out. Those babies deserve a mother and a father.”

“Finding out about the twins was a shock to me, but they’re here. Now, we’re just trying to sort everything out,” Taylor responded.

“I told Rayne that I wouldn’t interfere, so I’m not going to—I just want what’s best for my grandchildren.”

“I understand. Carol, I really appreciate you giving us the space we need.”

“I’m sure Rayne’s angry with me for telling you that she was on the island. I don’t regret it because you needed to know about your children.”

“She knows your actions were from a place of love.”

“I hope so,” Carol said. “How is Rayne?”

“She’s great. She looks good. Happy.”

“Is she staying with my sister?”

“No, she’s with Leon and Misty.”

“I’m not surprised. They have always been close. More like siblings than cousins. I know that she missed them a lot.”

“I got the impression that he missed her just as much. Leon and his wife have been very welcoming and supportive to both me and Rayne.”

“That’s good to hear.”

“I know that Rayne would love to have you spend Christmas with her and the twins. You should consider coming to the island.”

“I don’t know about that. It’s been seventeen years.”

“Your sister would really enjoy seeing you as well,” Taylor said. “Miss Eleanor talked a lot about how much she misses you.”

“I miss her, too.”

They talked a few minutes more before hanging up.

Taylor had second thoughts about what he’d just done. Rayne was going to be furious with him for inviting her mother to the island without talking to her first. She had worked hard to establish firm boundaries when it came to Carol.

He found it touching to witness how much she loved her daughter, especially since Taylor hadn’t ever experienced what parental love looked or felt like.

He hoped it wasn’t too late for them. Taylor wanted Carol and Rayne to repair whatever was wrong in their relationship. What they had was something special...if only they had the sense to see it.

CAROL GULPED HARD, hot tears slipping down her cheeks. She released a low, tortured sob as the depths of her heartbreak rose to the forefront. She had done everything possible to be a good mother to Rayne. She left the island all those years ago to protect her only child.
