After such an intense connection, McKenna needed to ground herself back in reality so once they showered and changed, she insisted on creating space between the two of them and her bedroom. They ended up in the living room where she could disconnect from the orgasms Carter had so graciously provided.

“Tell me what you know?”

McKenna sat with her back to one end of the sofa, while Carter occupied the other. He had one foot resting on the floor, the other leg extended toward McKenna. One arm was tucked behind his head while the other with his injured shoulder rested beside him, his hand flat against his abs. McKenna sat upright with her knees tucked into her chest while her chin rested on top of them.

“About?”

“About how you ended up here.”

He chuckled, shaking his head. “I’m not telling you that shit.”

“I want to help.”

He stared at her pretty face for a long moment, then smiled. “I just fucked you and made you cum. You still want me out of here that bad that you’re on some Biggie shit?”

She frowned and he made a gun motion with his hand. “Who shot ya, separate the weak from the obsolete.”

McKenna rolled her eyes dramatically. “Correction, I fucked you and it’s not about that. I’m trying to be a good friend.”

“We’re friends now, Kenni?”

She groaned at her nickname leaving his mouth. When anyone else used the shortened version of her name, it made her feel childish, but when Carter did, she felt weirdly connected to a man she barely knew.

“For argument’s sake, yes. We’re friends. Tell me what you know and let me help.”

“Friends with benefits because I think I can fuck with that. You’ve been very beneficial to my recovery.”

“Carter…”

He chuckled and decided to cut her some slack. As adorable as she was, he didn’t think she would be much help figuring out his current dilemma but he had a new affinity for appeasing his new friend.

“What do you want to know?”

She perked up, eager to help, and he hated how much that simple shift landed right at his dick. “I don’t know, who doesn’t like you?”

Carter smirked and lifted a brow. “Other than you?”

“Cute. I don’t dislike you enough to try and shoot you.”

“I’m not convinced. Maybe I should be checking your spot for weapons.”

“Help yourself, I don’t have any. What about the guy who brought you here? Was he with you when it happened?”

“Yeah, he was, but he doesn’t have anything to do with it.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Life is more appealing than the alternative…”

Carter kept his eyes on McKenna, communicating what that meant. Disloyalty would not be tolerated.

“Oh, well who else?”

“A lot of people don’t like me. I’m not a likable person.”

“I won’t disagree but why don’t other people like you?”

She tightened her arms around her legs and rocked, flexing her toes, pushing them deeper into the cushion. Carter watched her, hesitating. He barely allowed the people he was closely associated with to know his plans. Especially those associated with how he kept money in his pocket and a roof over his head.
