Chapter ten
A week had passed since Danielâs first date with Tessa, and lately, it seemed as though they spent all their time together. Early morning coffee dates, late night editing sessions on his manuscriptâhe loved every moment he was able to get with her. He sat at the small kitchen table in his apartment, a cup of mostly drained Sleepy Time tea in his hands, smiling to himself like an idiot.
This woman has driven me completely mad, he thought to himself. With a shake of his head, he carried his nearly empty cup of tea to the sink, rinsing it out. It was time to turn in for the night. His household chores were done, his manuscript was mostly edited with Tessaâs notes. He just needed a good night's sleep, and this would be a productive day.
At least, that was the plan. However, Daniel woke up quite abruptly at a little past two in the morning to his phone buzzing loudly from his dresser. With a groan, he threw his pillow over his head and rolled over to go back to sleep. Whatever it was, it could wait, surely.
But as soon as the buzzing stopped, it paused for a mere moment before it started up again. Okay, whoever is calling better be at deathâs door, he grumbled to himself as he reached for the phone. His heart stopped when his eyes landed on the contact photoâTessa. Without hesitation and suddenly very awake, he answered the call.
âTessa? Are you alright?â
There were sniffles and a pitiful moan from the other end of the line, âItâs Pippin.â
Pippin? Oh, right, the dog. Daniel scrubbed at his sleep-heavy eyes as he tried to keep his tone calm. âWhat happened? Is he hurt?â
âIâI donât know. I think he might have gotten into something. He keeps throwing up, and he looks j-just awful!â Her words strangled off into a soft sob.
Danielâs heart squeezed. He hated to hear Tessa cry like that. There was something very primal that it activated inside of him. He wanted to protect her from anything that would make her cry.
âOkay, okay. Have you called the vet?â He was as gentle as could be, knowing the state Tessa must be in right now. That dog was her best friend. He went everywhere with her.
âI c-called. But they said they need to see him, and Iââ She fell apart once again, hard, jagged sobs overtaking the phone line.
âYeah, you probably shouldnât be driving. Give me a moment. Thereâs an emergency vet not far from you. Iâll pick you up, and weâll take him in.â He was already reaching for his keys.
She thanked him, though her voice was still filled with utter misery, and Daniel hung up. He got ready in record time, throwing on the first shirt he could find and not bothering to change out of his sweatpants. Fashion be damned, he needed to get to Tessa and make sure she was alright.
As soon as he was dressed, he flew down the stairs and out the door, racing toward his car.
