FACT #27 - Snakes

Even when a snake has its eyes closed, it can still see through its eyelids.

That’s right, the legless reptiles are even freakier than you might think.

Technically, snakes have no eyelids. Instead, they have a thin clear membrane that covers their eyes. And get this, they’re called spectacles. The membrane is attached to their skin, which means they can’t blink. It comes in handy seeing as they live close to the ground. They get dust, grit, and bits of vegetation in their faces as they slither around. The spectacles protect their eyes from getting scratched. A thin layer of tear-like fluid separates the membrane from the eye. Scientists are studying snake eyes to improve contact lenses.

The next time you go to the zoo, and it looks like a snake is staring at you, it could be having a nap inside.
