CHAPTER 10
âAll right. Why are you two double teaming me?â Kari asked when she arrived for the meeting Autumn had called. âIf itâs about last week, Kristen was more than happy to take that birth for me so I could fill in for the camp nurse at Sunrise. Iâm not complaining, but I miss having summers free to be with the kids at the camp.â
âThat was fine,â Kelly assured her.
Kari paled. âIf itâs not about work, itâs the baby, and it canât be good, not with both of you here.â
âDonât jump to conclusions,â Kelly said.
Autumn lifted her gaze to the ceiling. This was Kariâs fourth pregnancy, and she was their primary delivery nurse. Kelly should have realized Kari would be suspicious about this meeting, made on short notice, with Kelly joining them.
âYou know your blood sugar has been running high,â Autumn started.
âItâs been more normal this week. Iâve been checking it myself.â Kariâs eyes widened. âYouâre not going to put me on insulin, are you? With the other three, I controlled it with diet. Iâll be more careful, assign Eli as my food guard. Heâs well-trained at giving orders.
Autumn raised her hand palm out to stop her. âIâm concerned. I donât know why diet isnât working this time.â She hesitated. âIâm going to order more tests, but to me it looks like insulin might be necessary.â
Autumn caught Kellyâs frown. What did she expect? At Kariâs insistence, Autumn was still Kariâs midwife. And Kari understood what was going on. She wouldnât have asked about insulin if she hadnât thought that was where the conversation was headed. Why wouldnât she be straightforward with Kari, who was a friend and knew nearly as much about pregnancy and birth as Autumn and Kelly? Sheâd be straightforward with any of her mothers.
âI see.â Kari was quiet for a moment. âYou know I wouldnât do anything to jeopardize this baby.â She touched her rounded belly.
âI know, and neither would Iâ¦we.â Autumn had to include Kelly, even though Kelly had indicated sheâd wait a while longer before referring Kari out of the practice.
âAutumn asked me to talk with Jon about transferring you to his care for the rest of your pregnancy,â Kelly said.
That wasnât exactly right. Sheâd convinced Kelly that Kariâs pregnancy needed to be supervised by a doctor. Kelly had taken it on herself to talk with Jon before Autumn had had a chance to.
âI have an appointment,â Kelly said. âIâll leave you to make the arrangements with Jonâs office.
The door closed behind Kelly. âI have to switch, donât I? I canât convince you that Iâll be more careful?â Kari sighed. âWhat if the new tests donât show that I need insulin?â
âI think you need to be followed by a doctor. It doesnât have to be Jon. Is there someone at the medical center in Saranac that youâd rather use?â
âIf itâs my choice, Iâd rather continue to see you. I figured by the time this one is ready to pop, Iâd have you convinced to do the delivery.
