CHAPTER FIVE

“Tango, this is Whiskey break-break. Come in. Over.”

Dix pulled the coverlet over his head and burrowed his face deeper into his pillow. It had been four weeks, but despite several washings and a disastrous encounter with a bottle of tequila, if he concentrated hard enough, he thought he could still smell Kristof’s scent embedded in the fabric.

Which told Dix that he was subject to delusions now.

“Tango, I know you’re there.” Whiskey’s voice was laced with annoyance. The tablet next to his bed crackled ominously as the speaker on the com line flared into life. “You need to pick up, over.”

Dix stuck a hand out, groped for the tablet, and threw it across the room.

Three minutes later, the land line started ringing.

“Fuuuuuuck.” Dix flailed up out of the nest of blankets. He’d never get any peace until he answered the fucking phone. Whiskey was as stubborn as they came.

Dix snatched the phone up. “What?” he barked into the mouthpiece.

“Hello to you too, Sunshine,” Whiskey answered. “Where the fuck were you? You missed the briefing.”

“I was…sleeping.”

“It’s oh eleven hundred.”

“I forgot to set the alarm.”

Whiskey sighed. “Your existential crisis is getting old, Tango.”

“It’s not an existential crisis. I know the meaning of life. I’m just having a shitty breakup.”

“Oh boo-hoo. You need to get your boyfriend problems squared away, Tango. It’s been a month.”

“As long as all that,” Dix responded dryly.

“Oh, was I being insensitive? So fucking what! Life goes on.”

“Remind me how you stay alive without that thing called a heart. What’d I miss? It’s always the same shit. Domestic terrorism? The North Koreans threatening the Internet again?”

“Los Zetas.”

Dix instantly went taut.

“Do I have your attention now?”

“Yeah. You have it.”

“Well halle-fucking-lujah.”

Whiskey recapped the call Dix missed earlier. Dix didn’t pay attention to half of the minutia Whiskey was famous for, but the gist was that after laying low in the aftermath of the gun battle that nearly killed him, Sanchez Arellano had emerged in a fury of retribution. The towns under Arellano’s control, which included Tijuana and Tecate, as well as the hamlets and agricultural villages along the porous U.S./Mexico border, were under a state of siege.

“Los Zetas has gone from killing civilians as part of collateral damage to using dead civilians as calling cards, including U.S tourists and day-trippers. The Mexican National Guard has Tijuana on lockdown, but that’s only making Arellano bolder. Los Zetas has gone from three killings a day to ten or more, and the number continues to increase.”

“Arellano is trying to draw the Syndicate out.”

“No. He’s trying to draw out the Code Ultra asset who betrayed him.”

Dix’s hand tightened convulsively on the receiver.

“Have you heard from Two-Feather, Tango?” Whiskey asked more gently.

“Not a word.”

And Dix hadn’t. When he returned home from Mexico, Kristof had already cleared out his stuff very thoroughly. No stray socks in the laundry, all the crossword puzzles deposited in the recycling bin. Not even his cheap-ass, store brand grooming products were left in the bathroom. It was as if he’d never been there.
