Chapter Ten
Amelia and Duncan had almost finished their breakfast. He picked up the strawberry jam and spooned some onto his toast. Sheâd bought some from the shop just in case Juno turned up. What was it she called it? Oh yes, jelly. Was it only yesterday? It seemed like weeks ago. She missed Juno so much.
Duncan crammed the last piece of toast into his mouth, ran a finger over his mouth, and licked the last few crumbs off. âOkay. Letâs get to work.â He took out his notebook. âI have a photo of Junoâs car, and you could see the number plate, so Iâve called in a favour. I also have Junoâs address in Redland Village.â
âFrom the registration?â
âYup.â
Amelia reached over and hugged Duncan. âYou little darling. How did you manage that?â
Duncan grinned. âDonât ask questions.â He put a finger across his lips. âMumâs the word.â
Amelia jumped up. âLetâs go then. I have to find her and explain.â From very early on, sheâd known Juno was different to any person sheâd ever met. Sheâd listened to her and responded with careful thoughtfulness. Sheâd been patient and understanding about her orderly lifestyle and she never made fun of her, as Ro had done on many an occasion. Sheâd tried to destroy her confidence, whereas Juno gave her a feeling of self-assurance and an appreciation of her abilities and qualities. She conversed with her as though she was almost normal and not an oddity. She was amazing in so many ways, and the thought of having hurt her made Amelia physically sick. She simply had to find a way to make things right.
âOkay. But donât get your hopes up. She might not be there. Then weâll have to try another tack.â
âI know, but we have to try it first.â Amelia crossed her fingers. She prayed Juno would be there, and then all of this misunderstanding could be sorted out.
They left and got into Duncanâs car. âDo you know where Danbury Close is?â
âIs that it? I walked down there. God, if only Iâd have known, I could have found her, and everything would be okay.â
âHindsight. Itâs a disaster waiting to happen. Just give me directions.â
Amelia directed Duncan and they quickly arrived outside number twenty-one.
She was apprehensive, nevertheless she had to do this. Usually when misunderstandings happened, she wasnât sure what had gone wrong or what had been misinterpreted, and she rarely cared enough to make things right. Even when she did, she couldnât figure out how to approach it, so she left it. She hated confrontation nearly as much as she hated cauliflower, but for Juno, sheâd risk it. She opened the car door and walked slowly towards the house. As she approached, she turned around and looked to Duncan for moral support. He waved her on. She opened the gate and advanced towards the door of the pretty little cottage. There was a buzzer, and she pressed it several times. She could hear it ringing so at least she knew it was working. Her tummy churned with nerves.
