“If it isn’t Beauty.” Louis smiled as I walked over to him.

“Good morning, Louis.”

“Good morning. Pottsy told me you weren’t feeling too good. Are you okay?”

“I’m better,” I admitted. “How are you?”

“I’m hanging in there.” He was interrupted by a series of coughs.

I went behind him, propping his pillows up for him to sit up. I took my stethoscope and started listening to his heart and lungs. It sounded as if he had some fluid on his lungs.

“Is your chest hurting, Louis?” I asked, still listening to his chest.

“No. This cough is just aggravating.”

I went on to check his blood pressure, getting through the rest of his vitals.

“So, what do you and that son of mine have planned for tomorrow?”

“We’re supposed to be getting a tree to put up,” I answered.

“A real tree I hope.”

“I’m guessing so since we’ll be outside picking it.” I chuckled.

“Christmas is one of his favorite holidays.”

“I’m sure you spoiled him rotten around this time.” I joked.

“I did, but he never cared about the gifts. It was the time spent that he was big on. I mean, he made everyone in this house participate in holiday activities. He kept the Christmas spirit alive around here.”

“What made you adopt as a single father?” I asked, curious to know the truth behind that.

“That wasn’t a part of the plan,” he admitted. “Me and my wife filed to adopt together. We were at the finish line when Camille passed. It was one of the hardest events in my life. We were supposed to get this kid, and out of nowhere she was gone. Even though this entire house was in mourning I knew I couldn’t turn my back on the adoption. That wouldn’t have been something she wanted me to do.

“So after I laid her to rest I continued on with the process and a month later, Princeton was mine. It’s crazy he never once met Camille, but he reminds me so much of her. It was like within losing her I gained her spirit in him.”

“He’s lucky to have you.”

“No. I’m lucky to have him. He was the best thing to ever happen to me after losing my wife.”

Hearing him talk about how much Princeton meant to him was really sweet. The relationship between a son and his father was one that needed to be seen often. It was sad hearing about the loss of his wife, but knowing he felt as though he had her through his son was beautiful.

The rest of our day consisted of what we did best. We played a game or two and I read a few chapters from one of his favorite books. We even watched a movie. Before it was time for me to leave he asked me for something.

“I need you to do me a favor, if you can.”

“Anything,” I spoke.

“I wanna watch you guys decorate the tree. I’ve been cooped up in this room for a little over a year and I would love to be a part of the holidays being that this may be my last one.
