Saturdays were supply days. Two of the men could have done it, but Tyler and Olivia always took the buckboard into Golden and picked up supplies. All of their suppliers wanted to see Josie and see how fast she was growing. She was five months old now and every little thing she did, seemed new. Tyler was glad to be able to take her now, too.

Olivia had taken to writing down every new thing, from rolling over to smiling at her daddy and Olivia and anyone who talked to her. She was eating some solid food, and Olivia delighted in feeding her from her plate. Olivia always took longer than everyone else to finish a meal, but she didn’t care.

On Saturdays, the first stop was the mercantile. While Olivia took Josie to see Clem and Bessie, Tyler started filling his burlap sack with canned goods.

“Clem, how do you do it?” asked Olivia. “You always have the order ready when we get back and it looks like you do that for everyone. Do you have some leprechauns here helping you?”

He put his hands on his large stomach and laughed. “I do have a lot of helpers today. In addition to my wife, Bessie, all four of our boys are here.” He pointed to the young men walking around the store filling burlap bags with canned goods. “Both of our daughters, Susan and Ethel, and their husbands are here, too. I need the help and they need the extra money. They come in on Fridays, get their own supplies and have supper with their mother, the boys and me before working in the store today and then they’ll go back tomorrow after church. Sometimes they take their supplies home on Friday and come back Saturday morning.”

“My goodness, that’s a lot of time in the buckboard.”

“You get used to it,” said Susan. She was a blue-eyed blonde and seemed to either take after her father or was expecting. She stopped to tickle Josie. “She’s just so darn cute. I can’t wait until we have one of our own.” Susan placed her hand protectively over her stomach.

Olivia was green with envy wishing she could feel and act the same way. But she smiled, genuinely happy for the woman regardless of her envy. “How soon will your little one arrive?”

Susan smiled. “In just over two months.”

“I envy you. I love Josie so much. I can’t wait to give her siblings.”

Susan squeezed Olivia hand. “You will in good time. You have this little one to raise up a bit first.”

Susan left to place the bolt of cloth she carried across her shoulder on the stack of bolts on a table in the middle of the store, away from the windows.

Clem couldn’t resist Josie either. He came around from behind the counter with the cash register and walked over to Olivia and Josie. “How are you, little one?” He tickled Josie’s tummy. “The missus and I can’t wait to have grandchildren. Babies we can spoil.” He looked up as someone came up behind Olivia.
