When Elizabeth arrived, she was surprised to see there were two gigs already waiting outside the house. A groom was holding onto one of the horses who seemed restless. Miss de Bourgh was just coming out of the house dressed in another heavy satin dress and jacket. She wore no bonnet on her light brown hair, and carried a riding stick.

She waved it in Elizabeth’s direction. “Good afternoon, Miss Bennet. Isn’t this fun?”

Elizabeth didn’t reply. She was wondering why there were two gigs.

“I thought it would be fun to go for a ride,” said Miss de Bourgh and then we can have a race.”

Once again Miss de Bourgh had surprised her. She had never been in charge of a gig, but she was certain that racing would be a foolish thing to do.

The groom was still holding onto the reins of one of the horses. “Miss de Bourgh - I am not sure you should take this gig out,” he told her.

Anne de Bourgh looked disconsolate “Why on earth not?”

“Bay is restless. I’m not sure what the matter is,” said the groom, “but he’s not happy. I think he should be taken back to the stable.”

“Perhaps he will calm down when we set off,” said Miss de Bourgh

“No miss. It’s not safe. I’m going to take him back.”

Elizabeth wondered if Miss de Bourgh would continue to argue, but she didn’t.

“Miss Bennet, it seems we will have to share this gig. I hope you’re not disappointed.”

Elizabeth felt only relief.

It wasn’t long before they were settled in place. The groom tried to instruct Miss de Bourgh how she should hold the reins, but she was too excited to listen. The man looked worried. “This one is calmer than Bay but you should go slowly miss.”

Miss de Bourgh, ignored his concerns. “Stop looking so worried, Thomas. I can do this.”

She gently tapped the horse and suddenly the gig was pulling away across the courtyard.

“Have you ever driven a gig before?” asked Elizabeth.

Miss de Bourgh, smiled at her. “Mother never wanted me to, but when I was younger Mrs. Jenkinson occasionally took me out and allowed me to take the reins.”

Elizabeth felt worried, but there was little she could do and but hold on firmly and hope Miss de Bourgh would not do anything foolish
