At the heart of Sandflugtdalen is a glacial river which carries vast quantities of sand and silt downstream. Whenever the flow eases, some of it is deposited to form sandbanks and mudflats. On dry, windy days some of this material, referred to as ‘loess’, is blown into dust-storms, settling as drifts and dunes. While vegetation can get a root-hold in some parts, it can also be overwhelmed by further drifting. Sandflugtdalen is around 150m (490ft) above sea level. Occasionally, Hercules transporter aircraft practice dropping cargo on the sandflats, preparing for when they have to resupply the Sirius Dog Sled Patrols operating on the ice cap.
