SAM: “We’ve been working with each other for a few weeks now and I really appreciate how open you’ve become with me. I’m wondering, have you ever tried any meditation? As a way to deal with your stress?”

MARTIN: “Meditation? Nah. I don’t know about that stuff.”

SAM: “Would you like to know more about it and how it might help?”

MARTIN: “I mean, okay. I guess so.”

SAM: “When you hear meditation what comes up for you? What images comes to mind?”

MARTIN: “Fuckin’ monks. Hippies and shit. That’s why I don’t really think it’s for me.”

SAM: “Yeah I could see why you might not be into it, thinking about it that way. The type that I like to teach is called mindfulness meditation. Have you ever heard of mindfulness?”

MARTIN: “Kind of. Not really though.”

SAM: “To me, I think the biggest difference between mindfulness and some other types of meditation is that mindfulness is all about being real, being present and nonreactive. I see it less as something for monks and more for folks like us, living in the world dealing with anger, stress, and other emotions.”

MARTIN: “Oh, okay. I didn’t really see it like that.”

SAM: “No worries. I really like this metaphor that I feel encapsulates what mindfulness is and what it isn’t really well. It’s called the ‘lion mind versus dog mind’ metaphor. You up for hearing it?”

MARTIN: “Sure.”
