THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROCESS

As Figure 7-1 shows, the process includes four steps that are generally cyclical in nature:

1. Define the purpose

2. Select the test and vendor

3. Recruit participants

4. Interpret, report, and maintain

We’ve chosen to portray the process this way because some may have a single genealogical dilemma to tackle and succeed in finding an answer after one trip around this cycle, but many find that the first round just whets the appetite for more! It is not at all unusual for first-timers to press on past the last step back to the first in the hope of obtaining more insight or trying to solve another genealogical riddle.

And while more established projects will frequently find themselves in a mini-cycle rotating repeatedly through the third and fourth recruiting and reporting steps, even they can be sent back to step 1 by an unexpected finding or to step 2 by the introduction of an upgraded test. Assuming you plan on managing a project of more than 10 or so participants, though, you can expect to spend the majority of your time on the last two steps. For that reason, while we will cover the entire process in this chapter, we’ll take a closer look at the recruiting aspect in Chapters 8 and 9, and interpretation and reporting techniques in Chapter 10.
