Chapter Eight

Leaping over the hedge, Trace ran in the same direction as Lily. What had her running? A distant whistle blew. He looked over his shoulder and saw nothing. Her name weighed heavy on his tongue as he resisted the urge to call out. Just because he couldn’t see the danger didn’t mean it didn’t exist. He wouldn’t make such a novice mistake by shouting.

His nano-enhanced hearing picked up the chaotic sound of her footsteps. She hadn’t slowed and was heading away from the resort.

Trace sent the footage of Lily running to his teammates. They could track his location via the nano GPS system and possibly head her off.

“On my way,” Hack and Crypto echoed each other.

The nanos worked on increasing his energy and strengthening his leg muscles so his speed and agility grew. With enhanced vision, he spotted her footprints in the jungle’s soft soil. He didn’t have the luxury of sweeping the ground clean so whoever followed couldn’t find them. He had to reach Lily first.

Yellow flashed between the foliage ahead of him. He added more speed, ignoring the pain of his bare feet.

Lily ran around a boulder taller than him.

He leaped over the obstacle, landing on the other side a second before she collided into him.

They both went to the ground with an oomph, her body landing on top of his.

Cupping her face, he checked for signs of injury. “Are you hurt?”

“T—Trace?” She glanced behind her. “Are you the one chasing me?” She sat astride his hips and fanned her face. “Why are you only wearing a bathing suit?” Her gaze scanned over his chest and abdomen with a touch of hunger.

“I was at the pool party when I saw you running.”

“Pool party.” She stood, wiping her hands on her shorts. “I think I remember seeing that.” She then pressed her somewhat dirty hands to her cheeks. “I have to keep moving. I don’t know what they’ll do to me if I’m caught.” She pushed onto her feet and he followed.

Before she could start running again, he hooked an arm around her waist. “Wait. Start from the beginning.”

She struggled. “We don’t have time.”

“Does this pertain to your secret identity and the missing humans?”

She visibly deflated in his arms. “Yes. Pete doesn’t know my real name, but it’s only a matter of time before he grows suspicious enough to research Lily Elms’ past and finds none.” Twisting around, she met his stare. “I need to get off the island now. I need to warn people to stay away no matter how crazy I sound.”

Trace didn’t have to fake emotions or expressions around Lily like he did with those at the party. She inspired the real stuff, including his present frown. “Nobody will hurt you while you’re under my protection.” He could sense Hack and Crypto growing closer, but not as close as whoever was following Lily’s tracks. “Someone is coming.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her deeper into the jungle.

It didn’t take long for him to realize they would be caught if forced to move at her slower speed.
