Knock. Knock.

I heard a light tap on my bedroom door before I saw Santiago’s head peek through the crack. After Priest snapped on my ass yesterday, Diamond and I had a few more choice words for each other. I was so angry, I couldn’t even stay at that house. I wasn’t mad at my sister, and I wasn’t mad at Priest. I was pissed with myself because I knew they both were right. Not having anywhere else to go to, I ran straight to Santiago. I wasn’t even sure what he could do to help, but I needed some time to myself to snap out of this trance before I lost the last person I have in my corner — my sister.

“Good morning, sweetheart. How are you feeling?”

“I’m okay. Thanks for letting me stay here.”

“No thanks necessary, baby girl. You’re my daughter, and I told you already, this is your home if you want it. Now, are you going to tell me what happened between you and Diamond?”

“I made a big mistake, dad. I know Diamond would never do anything to hurt me; she’s been the one who’s taken care of me my whole life. She’s been my rock, my protector. But my ex has destroyed my confidence in myself and my trust in others. I don’t look like myself anymore, I don’t feel like myself, and I damn sure don’t act like my old self anymore. And it’s all because of him.”

“I know exactly how you feel, baby. I’ve been there way too many times. Now, I’m not trying to be all up in your business, and I know that you are an adult, but I have heard a few things from a couple of people about your involvement with this Von cat as well as this Priest dude.”

“What?” I sat upright in the bed with a bewildered look on my face. “How do you know about them?”

Taking a deep breath, he took a few steps closer and sat at the foot of my bed. “Secret, have you ever heard of a man named Zeus?”

“Um, no. I can’t say that I have. Why?”

“Because I am Zeus. Or at least, that’s what the streets call me. I once was the most powerful force to be reckoned with in Chicago. I was the leader of the Black Disciples, and I had a huge following, including your ex, Von. He was single-handedly one of my most feared, notorious soldiers. I’ve known Von for a very long time, and I know the type of guy he is. Now, I definitely would not have approved of him pursuing you because he’s more of a street nigga, not a lover.”

“Humph. You got that right.” I rolled my eyes at the thought of all the bullshit Von had put me through.

“Von was brought up in the streets, Secret. No mama, no daddy, no type of guidance. It’s always been just him and his brother. I saw his potential to be something great in life because he’s smart as hell.
