Marco

I didn’t give a damn about that dude sitting in my chair as I watched Star come get the rest of her stuff from the crib. My heart tore in two when she looked up at the camera before leaving her ring. I’d been sick without her and my baby, and not just mentally. Sometimes I’d find myself gripping the toilet bowl. To make matters worse, Xavier was blaming me for her absence, even though he didn’t know what transpired. I’d been texting her day in and day out only to be left on read. It was better than being blocked I guess. The only time she communicated with me was to let me know that I could pick the baby up from daycare today.

“Say man! You gon’ cut my hair or what? I don’t have time to be sitting here all day,” my client complained.

“Yeah, nigga! I’m bout to cut that nappy ass shit!” I snapped.

“What the fuck is yo problem?” He turned around.

“What the fuck is yours?!”

“Aye!” Bless interrupted. “Marco, go in the back and take a break, man. I’ll cut his hair.”

“That nigga trippin,” Terrence whispered to Jarrell. “And where the hell Star been at?”

I sprinted over and hemmed him up. “Don’t worry about where my girl at! I should blow yo fucking brains out, dirty muthafucka!”

His eyes were like boiled eggs. “Bless, ya’ll need to get this crazy nigga!”

“Bro, turn him loose. Come go with me for a minute.” Jodeci tugged at my arm.

“I’m sorry, sis,” I apologized as I followed her to her car. “I’m all fucked up.”

“You wouldn’t be fucked up if you would’ve just done right,” she chastised.

Bile rose in the back of my throat before I regurgitated on the pavement.

“What’s wrong with you? You got a virus or something?” She made an ugly face while passing me a half empty bottle of water and some napkins.

After rinsing my mouth out and popping in a piece of Trident, I slid into the passenger seat of her Range Rover.

“I don’t have a virus. The shit just comes and goes.”

“Ohh… so you love sick. I tried not to say nothing since Bless told me to mind my business, but why in the world would you do something so stupid?” She pulled out of the parking lot.

“I didn’t do nothing!” I pulled at my dreads.

“It looked like you was doing something to me. And don’t crack up in my car because I will bust you upside the head.” She side eyed me at the red light.

“I swear on my kids that I never cheated on Star! God can take them right now if I’m lying! Somebody is playing on my top.”

“Okay, okay! I believe you.”

“How do I get Star to believe me?”

She hunched her shoulders. “I don’t know because she is stubborn as hell, and once she gets something in her head, it’s a wrap. I’ll try to talk to her.”

“Thank you. Now where are we going?” I asked.

“I’m going to the bank to make a deposit, and then I’m going grocery shopping.
