âAre you sleeping better now?â Tom asked her.
She hesitated. âNot really.â
âWhat do you mean, not really?â
âI have a problem,â she sighed.
âA problem?â
âOh, I might as well tell you.â
âOf course.â
âTom, I think Sekou comes to my room at night.â âWhat?â he cried. âYouâre crazy. What do you mean, he comes to your room?â
âJust that.â
âWhat does he do? Does he say anything?â
âNo, no. He just stands beside my bed in the dark.â âThatâs insane.â
âI know.â
âYouâve never seen him?â
âHow could I? Itâs pitch dark.â
âYouâve got a flashlight.â
âOh, that terrifies me more than anything. To turn it on and actually see him. Who knows what heâd do then, once he knew Iâd seen him.â
âHeâs not a criminal. God, why are you so damned nervous? Youâre safer here than you would be anywhere back in New York.â
âI believe you,â she said. âBut thatâs not the point.â âWhat is the point? You think he comes and stands by your bed. Why do you think he does that?â
âThatâs the worst part of all. I canât tell you. Itâs too frightening.â
âWhy? Do you think heâs planning to rape you?â
âOh no! Itâs nothing like that. What I feel is that heâs willing me to dream. Heâs willing me to dream a dream I canât bear.â
âA dream about him?â
âNo. Heâs not even in the dream.â
Tom was exasperated. âBut what is this? What are we talking about, finally? You say Sekou wants you to have a certain dream, and you have it. So then he comes the next night, and youâre afraid youâll have it again. According to you, why does he do
this? I mean, what interest would he have in doing it?â
âI donât know. That makes it more horrible. I know you think itâs ridiculous. Or you think Iâm imagining it all.â
âNo, I donât say that. But since youâve never seen anything, how can you be sure itâs Sekou and not somebody else?â
Later in the day he said to her: âAnita, are you taking vitamins?â
She laughed. âLord, yes. Dr Kirk gave me all kinds. Vitamins and minerals. He said the soil here probably was deficient in mineral salts. Oh, Iâm sure you think I have some sort of chemical imbalance that causes the dreaming. That could be. But it isnât the dream itself that scares me. Although God knows itâs too repulsive to talk about.â
He interrupted. âIs it sexual?â
âIf it were,â she said, âit would be a lot easier to describe. The thing is, I canât describe it.â She shuddered. âItâs too confusing. And it makes me feel sick to think of it.â
âMaybe you should let me be your analyst. What happens during the dream?â
âNothing happens. 1 only know something terrible is on its way. But as I say, itâs not the dream that bothers me. Itâs knowing Iâm being obliged to have it, knowing that black man is standing there inventing it and forcing me into it. Thatâs too much.â
