Chapter Twenty-Seven

Nicole

I woke to warm sunlight and the smell of chamomile tea as my mom walked into my room carrying a breakfast tray. She set it down and threw open my curtains making me wince. My head was throbbing and the rest of me felt like I’d been hit by a truck.

My mom sat down on the edge of my bed. She kissed my forehead and stroked my hair like she used to when I was little. “How do you feel?”

I groaned. “Like I’m never going to drink again.”

“Now that’s what a mother likes to hear.” She smiled and picked up my injured hand. “Let’s have a look.”

I watched as she unwrapped the gauze, slightly terrified of how bad it was going to be. To my surprise my hand wasn’t that bad. Beyond the stitches it just looked like a jagged red cut, spanning the distance of my thumb to my wrist.

“It looks like a lightning bolt,” I grumped.

“Well, you’ve finally got your wish. You match Harry Potter.”

“Very funny, Mom.”

“I thought so.”

“Yes, I bet you’re a huge hit with the eight-year-olds at the hospital.”

She laughed. “As a matter of fact, I am.”

I rolled my eyes, but even that hurt. “It’s going to scar, isn’t it?”

“Most likely.”

I gave her a withering look, but she served it right back. “Let this be a lesson to you. Next time, go to the hospital.”

“You’re a surgeon!”

“Yes, but we don’t live in a surgery center, do we? We had to make do with what we had.”

I looked down at the perfect stitches again and realized that I was being overly dramatic. They were textbook. Probably better than what I actually would’ve gotten at the hospital considering I might’ve ended up with some intern doing them rather than my surgeon parents since hospitals didn’t often let family members operate on each other.

My mom patted my cheek in sympathy, then wrapped fresh gauze around my hand, before passing me my cup of tea. “So, are you going to tell me what happened last night?” she asked.

Just then there was a knock at my bedroom door. For a moment my heart leapt thinking it was Ian. But it wasn’t. It was Chris who poked his face into my room.

Disappointment filled my wounded heart.

What was wrong with me? Did I seriously want to see Ian after everything that went down between us last night?

The answer was no. I didn’t want to see Chris either. He was just as much to blame for what happened. If he and Ian hadn’t started their stupid ‘no dating Nicole’ ban none of this would’ve happened.

“Morning,” Chris said, pushing the door open further. “Just wanted to check in on the patient.”

“Get out!” I growled, surprising both my mom and Chris.

“Nicole!” my mom exclaimed, shocked by my tone.

“I’m mad at him,” I explained, refusing to look at my brother.

“At me?” Chris asked, sounding far too indignant for my liking. “What did I do?”

I finally turned my glare on him. “Don’t play dumb, Christopher. Noah told me everything.
