Teeth set hard in her lips Gay stepped on the gas. Swung the wheel. Shot straight for the hideous shape.

“Look out! You crazy—”

With the yell the frightful thing crashed into roadside shrubbery. Vanished. The roadster’s hood missed a tree by a miraculous inch. With frenzied strength Gay swung back to the highway. The creature had a man’s voice! That made it more of a menace. Her body shook. Her throat parched. The car shot ahead. Skimmed up the drive at Rosewynne. Skidded as the brake jammed on. The suddenness of the stop sent the poodle over the door.

Gay raced up the steps. Into the house. Across the hall. Conscious of nothing but a furious urge to warn the Major and Brian. The evil thing might mean danger to them.

She plunged into the library. Stopped. Brian was near the fireplace back to the door. Bee Ware glanced over his shoulder. Her eyes met Gay’s. She put her hand on his arm. Protested provocatively:

“Don’t kiss me again, darling, until you are free.”

Gay clutched her throat to strangle a sob. Too late. Brian wheeled.

“Gay! Gay! What is it?”

His voice came through a fog. A whirling fog. If only she had someone to hold to. If Jim—Jim—

An instant later a savage voice rasped:

“No. Get out!”

The fog closed in again. Cleared. She was in the library at Rosewynne. Who was stroking her hands? Brian? Brian on his knees beside the chair, his head clear-cut against the firelight behind him. It couldn’t be Aunt Cass holding a glass to her lips. There were tears in this woman’s eyes. Aunt Cass never cried. That was Major Willum looking down at her. Her world steadied.

She freed her hands and pushed away the glass. Sat as erect as she could with her head feeling as if it were a lighter than air ship which would float away from its mooring if she moved quickly.

“If you tell me I fainted—” she fought to keep her voice steady—“I won’t believe you. I never fainted in my life.”

“Gay! What happened?” Brian demanded hoarsely. He was standing now. She had forgotten how tall he was. His eyes burned into hers, even his lips were colorless.

“What happened to send you bursting into this room like a cyclone, darling?”

Darling. Gay puckered her brows. She had heard that word before the fog caught her. Someone had called somebody darling in the library. What had sent her bursting into the—

Memory returned in an overwhelming tide. She sprang to her feet. Her eyes widened in terror. She shivered. Stammered brokenly:

“It was—it was—”

Brian had her in his arms. Said with his lips against her hair.

“Steady, lovely, steady. Don’t talk. Wait!”

“I’m all right now, see?” She pushed him away. “I’m not shaking. It was something in the road. Something hor—rible.”

“Sit down in my chair before you tell us anything more, Gay. Brian, make her drink that stuff in the glass.”

It was a super-daring person who would rebel when William Romney gave an order in that voice.

“Brian needn’t apply the thumb screws.
