List #4: Most Important Things (MITs)

This is where the action happens. Whereas the weekly list is full of routine activities and scheduled appointments, the Most Important Things (MITs) list focuses on three very specific tasks that will be accomplished on a given day. (Credit to Leo Babauta for this idea.)

MITs work best when you pick two tasks that are immediately important (like working on a presentation or a major project) and a third that’s connected to an important habit (as an example, one of my MITs is always some type of writing.)

Another important aspect of this process is having a clear objective of the task with a rough time estimate of how long it takes to complete. That means setting specific, measurable objectives. For instance, let’s say you’re working on your next book. Instead of jotting down an MIT such as “Write next section of book,” you’d want to set a milestone like this: “Write 1,500 words of the ____ fiction novel.”
