Though Louis had been teasing Evie about crying during the ceremony, he discovered his voice shook as he said his vows, even though there was little of a romantic nature to be found in the civil service. The enormity of the chance she was taking on him, the belief and trust she was putting in him was humbling, though, and he knew he would never forget how he felt in this moment, the hope and joy and sheer relief of knowing she was his at last.

When they had signed a ridiculous amount of papers, which had taken an interminable time, Louis glanced up to see Wolf rubbing irritably at his eyes. He hid a smile and pretended not to notice, turning to his brother instead, who was grinning broadly.

“Félicitations, petit frère,” Nic said, hugging him and slapping his back with enthusiasm. “I’m so happy for you.”

Louis thanked him before turning to Wolf, who had got himself back under control.

“Congratulations,” the man said gruffly, his dark brows drawing together. “I suppose you’ll be going back to England now?”

“No, actually,” Evie replied before Louis could speak. “We’re staying, for a while at least. I want Louis to show me Paris, and… and I would like to get to know his friends, for they are my friends now too. Or, at least, they are if they want to be.”

She held out her hand to him and Louis felt a burst of pride in her, for her courage, her generosity, and simply because she tried so very hard to be kind.

Wolf regarded her small hand for a moment before sighing and taking it, bowing low.

“If you are to be friends, I think a formal introduction is in order,” Louis said as Wolf rolled his eyes and Evie sent him a quizzical glance.

“Madame la Comtesse,” he said, revelling in the ability to call her by her title. “May I introduce to you Wulfric De Vere, Viscount Latimer.”

Evie’s eyebrows shot up. “Viscount Latimer?” she repeated, eyes widening.

“Oh, now you’ve done it,” Wolf said, shaking his head. “It’s shock enough I’ve a title but that title. Yes, madame, that Viscount Latimer. My father was an unremitting bastard, a traitor, and a vile excuse for a human being.”

His expression was stony, his stance defiant, waiting for her to despise him, but Louis knew what Evie’s reaction would be, far better than his friend did.

Louis watched her, unsurprised when her face fell, her eyes sparkling.

“Oh,” she said softly. “Oh, you poor man. To be forced to live with the weight of his crimes upon your shoulders, to be exiled through no fault of your own. I’m so very sorry.”

She reached out to touch his arm and Wolf jolted, taking a step back and staring at her with such shock Louis had to hide a smile.

Louis stepped forward and embraced his friend, patting his back. “And now you understand,” he murmured in Wolf’s ear, and guided his wife out to the waiting carriage.

The moment the carriage door closed, Evie snuggled against him, raising her face to his for a kiss.
