Grace murmured good eve to the guards outside Gabrielâs room and wandered down the hall. With every kiss he had eased the pain and banished the issues that had tormented her all day.
The door leading into the main passageway to her room stood open, and she walked through and reached to close it behind her.
And saw a man standing in shadows. She froze, a chill of fear trickling down her spine.
âGood eve, Lady Grace,â Lord Ramsayâs voice came from the darkness. He stepped into the light of the torch beside the door. âWe were unable to converse at table this night. Lord Duncan seemed to be in a cordial mood and wished my attention.â
The door closed behind her. Her heart thundered against her ribs, and she drew a deep, calming breath. She folded her arms, pulling her tartan shawl against her while resting her hand upon the grip of her dagger. It was a small blade and would do little harm unless she could direct it to a most vulnerable area. After all the injuries she had helped treat, she knew just where to strike, but could she do it?
But surely he would not try to harm her here in the stairway. There were guards posted throughout the wing.
âYou wish tâ speak to me?â she asked in dread. What if he chose this moment to propose?
âYou canna avoid signing the charter for much longer, Grace. Why do you struggle so?â His dark blue eyes looked black in the dim light, and he seemed truly perplexed.
She remained silent, for to say she did not wish to sign away her soul for a house, that house being a direct gift from the king, would surely be used against her.
He cocked his head. ââTis more than you have ever had, is it not?â
âNot all wealth can be measured by what you possess. There are other riches.â Kinship with those around her. The comfort of a true home.
âDo you not see how rude it is to come to table looking as though you have been digging in the earth? A new gown would not go amiss. You can see that for yourself.â
So it was her manner and appearance he wished to address. âWhat I have, I have earned for myself. When I see a need, I will purchase more fabric and stitch another gown.â
âDo you mean tâ meet the regent dressed as you are?â
âI am certain he isna blind to how humble folk live. âTwas his awareness of my circumstances that has caused all this.â She could not keep the faintest hint of bitterness from her tone. ââTis my hope he winna sit in judgment of any man or woman who comes before him as his obedient subject, no matter how they are garbed.â
âYou could have coin to buy whatever you need, borrowed against the income you will have after you sign the charter. The right clothing will enhance your natural beauty. You will want tâ be at your best.â
The only man she wanted to be beautiful for was Gabriel.
