Chapter 6

Savannah’s day was already full, so having Timothy not feeling well wasn’t helping, but she desperately wanted to stop in and visit with him, if only she had a chance. Yet it seemed every time she was clearing up some time to see him, something went wrong, and she couldn’t get there.

When she did finally get to his room, it was almost the end of the day. She knocked gently and then poked her head around the corner. Sure enough, he was sound asleep. She quickly withdrew and noted that Shane was coming toward Timothy’s room. “I don’t know if you’re expecting to see him or not, but I think he’s napping.”

“In that case,” Shane murmured, “I won’t talk to him. I was checking in to see how he was doing anyway.”

“Which is what I’m doing too.” She smiled. “And it seems he’s holding but tired. I checked his file, and nothing sparks an alarm, but … I’d like to see him perk up a bit more.”

“And I can understand that,” Shane noted, smiling back at her. “Enough is going on in his world right now.”

“I just wish we could solve his budget issues.”

“And we will, as soon as we get that chance, but it’s never easy or fast stuff to sort out. There aren’t always happy endings to these cases.”

“And why is that?” she asked sadly. “You would think that there should be, on merit alone.”

“And there probably is,” he suggested, with a bright smile. “Yet that doesn’t mean necessarily it’ll be decided the way we think it should.”

“Right? You would think that the government would let a veteran stay until he’s done. It would save them in the long-term.”

“We still haven’t heard back on the appeal yet, have we?”

“I haven’t heard anything. Sometimes it’s so hard to keep our faith in the system.”

“And just when you’ve lost faith, they do something that makes you realize it’s all worthwhile,” he added. “So stand strong. Something will pop.”

And, with that, she had to trust. She nodded. As she was about to step away, she heard someone call out. She hesitated and then opened the door. “Is that you I heard?”

He reached out a sleepy hand to her. “Hey. Good to see you.”

“I’ve been trying to come by and see you all day.” She smiled, as she walked closer. “I haven’t really had a chance to get clear from the work until just now.”

“And work comes first.”

“It does sometimes,” she muttered. “Sometimes there’s really no choice.”

“Are there problems?” he asked. “Did something blow up here that I haven’t heard about?”

She shrugged. “There are always problems but nothing major.”

“Good.” Timothy yawned. “I didn’t really think I would sleep, but apparently I needed a nap.”

She chuckled. “Sleep is always a good way to fight off something like this. Gives the body a chance to heal.”

He shifted in the bed and sat up slightly.

“Do you want to adjust your bed?”

“No, it’s probably fine.” He yawned a couple more times. “Wow.” He looked around sheepishly.
