Time Magic Health Hack 7: Get Enough Vitamin D

Despite its name, vitamin D is not actually a vitamin at all, it’s a prehormone. It’s the ‘nosy neighbour’ of the body — sticking its beak into just about everything that’s going on in the body. It’s involved in so many processes and outcomes, including bone strength, muscle strength and immunity, as well as the creation of disease-preventing enzymes and proteins. It also affects the expression of thousands of genes. To say it’s an ‘all-rounder’ is an understatement!

Unfortunately, large swathes of the population don’t get enough of this powerhouse prehormone — vitamin D deficiency is thought to be one of the most common medical conditions worldwide.22 This can lead to all kinds of health problems including poor bone development, and increased risk of autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and common cancers.23 Vitamin D can be found in foods like red meat, oily fish, liver and egg yolks, although it’s very difficult to get all your requirements from food alone.

Luckily, there’s another source that’s easily available and totally free, and you’ll find it right outside your front door: the sun. Getting a healthy dose of sunlight on your bare skin stimulates your body to produce vitamin D and can help you meet your optimal daily requirements. How much time you’ll need to spend in the sun depends on your unique skin, where you live and what season it is. (If you live in the far northern or southern regions of the globe, during the winter months you may have to look to supplementation to meet your daily requirements. A whole year’s supply costs about as much as a few coffees, so this is a very affordable way to ensure your bases are covered.)

Of course, too much sun exposure comes with its own risks, so take a sensible approach: don’t overdo it and never let yourself get burnt.
