Chapter 22

Ari

A sigh of relief escaped me as soon as the car pulled out onto the road. I leaned back in the seat and closed my eyes.

“Hey, what’s wrong?”

I opened my eyes again and stared into Rat’s frowning face. I beamed at him. “Nothing. Everything is perfect… I’m free.”

His frown deepened.

Laughing, I shook my head. “It’ll probably sound stupid, but that house—my parents—have been like this shackle. They kept me locked up—chained to a wall. I hated it.” I peeked up at him through my lashes. “I just feel...free.”

The smile Rat shot me made my heart stutter in my chest. We’d eased into a routine at the clubhouse. He drove me everywhere and all the time together had forced us to get over our fight. Despite that, and despite the loud chaos that was the clubhouse, it was a more relaxed way of living than I’d ever had before.

Rat had managed to ease all my fears about marrying him. Even him being angry with me hadn’t lasted long and I’d never once feared that he’d kill me and dump my body in the river. The idea that he’d return me had been my biggest fear and he’d given me no doubts that despite any fights in the future he’d never do that.

The clubhouse was starting to feel like home. The house I’d just left was like a bad dream and I was happy to leave it behind to fade into distant memories.

My brows drew together and I sat up in my seat as we pulled up to the clubhouse. Lights were on everywhere and throngs of people were milling about.

“What-”

“I wasn’t lying when I told your mom we had our own celebration to get to,” Rat said with a smirk.

I’d thought he’d meant something else. The idea of being alone with my handsome biker, married, with the expectation between us that we’d consummate our marriage made me feel breathless.

“We can skip it, though, if you don’t want to deal with more people tonight.”

“No! This is great.” They’d gone to the trouble of planning a party for us. A real party, with people having real fun. Something warmed in my chest.

The door next to me jerked open and I flinched. Rat’s hand covered mine, comforting and warm.

“Come with me!” Bridget grinned, excitement written on her face.

“Um, where are we-”

She was already tugging me out of the car. I glanced over my shoulder at Rat, who just shrugged.

“We’re going to get ready at my place,” she huffed as she dragged me behind her. “You don’t want to be wearing a wedding dress all night.” She stopped so abruptly I slammed into the back of her with a grunt of surprise. “Unless you do...want to wear your dress?” Her blue eyes found mine.

“Uh, no, thanks.” It had been everything I wanted in a wedding dress, but it was time for it to go.

She graced me with the full power of her smile, and I blinked. If I was into girls, Bridget might be my type.
