Officers linked their conspiracy to other Poyang residents. Some lived nearby, like the fugitive landlord Daoist Zou, who was hiding out in Lushan Village, just across the river from Likuang. Daoist Zou, claiming an immortal spirit had taught him a method for divining the future, predicted the death of Mao Zedong and the return of Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists. Superstitious villagers, believing the Communists were sure to fall from power, let him hide out in Lushan. Another Bodhisattva Society rumor claimed that in Shanghai people were saying that âAmerica is going to drop an atomic bomb, and it will decimate the Peopleâs Liberation Army.â28
