Chapter 19

“Are you ready?” I call up the stairs.

I’m currently pacing around the room, nervously and braiding my hair back. I’d rather it not get absolutely matted up in Elarian’s absence again.

Elarian bounces down the stairs and pulls me into his arms, craning his neck to nuzzle into my braided locks.

“Absolutely not, you just got here. You could always stay for a few more days—”

“Elarian, it’s been five days. I’ve got to go before all hell breaks loose. These people need me; why I will never understand but they do.”

“Are you ready?” he asks, pulling away to caress my cheek with his thumb.

“Definitely not.” I laugh. “I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing.”

“You will figure it out as you have previously. In the meantime, I will mourn your absence greatly.”

My smile turns to a frown and I turn away, absentmindedly grabbing Elarian’s knapsack. While avoiding eye contact, I thrust it into his arms and head to the door. If I’m being completely honest, I don't want to go and leave him again.

I’m excited to help the refugees, but it somehow slipped my mind he wouldn’t be accompanying me. Fuck.

“You should keep this, you may need it more than me. I am not entirely sure how long you shall be gone, and I would feel more comfortable knowing you are fed. There is still discontent within me, that you were starved on that ship.”

“That’s not entirely accurate, Elarian.”

He grabs my wrist and yanks down my sleeve, baring my arm.

“You lost weight Gwendolyn, and not a negligible amount. Your softness is one of my favorite features of you, and they took that from me. You will be eating this time, take the bag.”

This time, Elarian thrusts it back into my arms, before opening the door for me.

“You know, you could be a little nicer about that.”

Elarian eyes me, before giving a graceful bow. “Indeed, right this way, lady Gwendolyn. A world that needs saving, awaits.”

Sighing loudly, I waltz out, purposefully ignoring him.

“You know, I can’t wait until all this is over and I can curl up with a good book. I miss the small things a lot.”

Elarian leads us down a path across a rocky hill. It looks like it’s been built into the side of a mountain.

“I was unaware you had a fondness for reading. What other things do you miss, before it became your job to stave off Aresoliius’s anger?”

“Hot meals, secret midnight snacks, and a few other things from Earth. I miss sitting with a good book and a cup of hot tea. I miss my friends—” and lying out in the freezing cold to stop my endless panic attacks.

I certainly don’t miss everything about Earth.

“And when this is over, where do you want to enjoy your tea and a good book, here with me—or back on Earth?” There’s an obvious hesitation in his voice, and his lips twitch nervously.

“It doesn’t really matter, it’s not like I can go back to Earth anyways,” I say, kicking a rock down the path and watching it tumble.
