After Zarathustra had said this to the hunchback and to those whose mouthpiece and spokesman he was, he turned to his disciples in great ill humor, saying:
“Truly, my friends, I walk among men as if amid the fragments and limbs of men!
“The most frightful thing to my eyes is to find man broken into bits and scattered as if across a battlefield or a butchers’ field.
“And when my eyes flit from the present to the past, they always find the same thing: fragments and limbs and dire accidents—but no people!
“The present and the past on earth—alas, my friends!—are what I find hardest to bear; and I’d be unable to go on living if I didn’t foresee that which must come.
“A seer, one who wills, a creator, myself a future and a bridge to the future—and, alas, still as if I, too, were a cripple on this bridge: Zarathustra is all of this.
“And you, too, have often wondered: ‘Who is Zarathustra to us? How should we define him?’ And, like me, you answered yourselves with new questions.
“Is he one who promises? Or one who fulfills? A conqueror? Or an inheritor? An autumn? Or a plowshare? A physician? Or one who has recovered?
“Is he a poet? Or a truthful man? A liberator? Or a tamer? A good man? Or an evil man?
“I walk among men as if they were the fragments of the future: that future which I behold.
“And all my thought and endeavor is to compose and collect into a unity that which is a fragment, riddle, and dire accident.
“And how could I bear to be a human being if man weren’t also a poet and riddle solver and the redeemer of chance?
“To redeem those of the past and to change all ‘There was’ into an ‘I wanted it that way!’—only that would I call redemption!
“The will is the liberator and joybringer: this I have taught you, my friends! But now learn this in addition: the will itself is still a prisoner.
