Chapter Eight
Elizabeth walked over to her closet, hung up her work clothes, and replaced them with a pair of jeans. Today had been a certifiable disaster. Theyâd barely been able to work a few more hours after lunch and not just because of Mattâs lack of progress. She was starting to think she should back out of this bet altogether. Sure, Melissa and Andrea would love rubbing in that sheâd lostânot to mention the price of joining them on one of their hedonistic weekend jauntsâbut Matt couldnât seem to grasp the simple concepts she was teaching him, and her feelings about him were getting . . . complicated.
Somehow she heard Andreaâs voice in her head. âIs that the real reason you want to back out?â
No. It was because today heâd managed to see right through her.
With a sigh, she went over to the window of her bedroom and looked out. She could catch a tiny glimpse of City Park from her window. Naturally Andrea had the larger room with two walls of windows that not only afforded her a gorgeous view of green trees and grass, but she could also see the top spire of the new One World Trade Center building. The people here in Manhattan were survivors. Maybe that was the reason sheâd never really felt like she belonged. Well, one of the reasons.
She heard a commotion outside her door and went to see which of her roommates was on the move. It was Melissa. Or at least she thought it was her beneath the thick mud mask that made her look like an escapee from a B horror film.
Melissa looked at her in surprise. âWow! I canât believe youâre home, and itâs four oâclock!â
âI guess I wanted to see how your half lived.â
âMeow! Your claws are showing. Well, at least I have the excuse that Iâm getting ready for a date.â
âSorry, that was uncalled for. Iâm a little stressed.â
âNaturally competition will do that to you. Weâll try not to rub it in too hard when we win. Of course, from what Iâve been hearing, this might not be a total loss for you, so youâre welcome.â
âFor what?â
âFor introducing you to Mr. Texas. Tyler and I were talking last night and think you two are perfect for each other.â
âOh, you do?â
âWell, I think youâre perfect for each other. Tylerâs not so sure.â She quickly added, âNot that I didnât defend you! He thinks youâre not really ready to have a relationship with his good buddy. Maybe youâre a little too businesslike, a little cold.â
âWell, of all the nerve,â Elizabeth said. âAnd I wasnât under the impression that I was supposed to have a relationship with Matt. I mean, we barely met, and Iâm really only trying to help him, like I do all of my clients.â
âSo you donât really care about anything more?â
âOf course nâwhy should it matter to anyone else what I want?â
Melissa looked hurt. âBecause after these past few months, I thought I was more than just your roommate.
