CHAPTER 8

“You’re going to hurt your neck if you keep doing that.”

Charisma grinned at Will’s remark as they walked through downtown Denver. “There’s just so much to see. I’ve never been here before.”

Colorado’s capital city bustled with life and a very different energy than that of Colorado Springs. Charisma had never felt so alive. She examined the new buildings, the paved roads and passersby with enthusiasm, noting that a majority of the crowd was heading in the same direction. The auditorium where the Democratic Convention would take place was crowded when Will, Thalia, and Charisma arrived.

“Here.” Will managed to locate empty seats and guided them there, his hand on Charisma’s elbow. Charisma’s excitement, already built to a new height, surged a little more as she settled into a chair. She beamed at Thalia as the woman sat beside her.

“Isn’t this exciting?” she asked.

“I find it very interesting,” Thalia replied, with a smile and considerably less enthusiasm than Charisma.

Charisma had to squint to make out the features of the man at the podium, but when he spoke, calling the meeting to order, she had no difficulty in hearing his booming voice. She listened to every word, still unable to believe she was actually here in Denver . . . at the convention . . . with Will by her side .

She glanced at him from the corner of her eye. He was focused on the speaker, jotting notes on a small tablet. Pride swelled in Charisma. He would be an outstanding senator. How could anyone doubt that he cared about the people he wanted to represent? With a smile, she returned her attention to the discussion of the platform.

When the talk turned to the subject of restoring the silver dollar as the primary currency, she had to bite her tongue to keep from jumping into the conversation. Her father’s fortune had come from silver. Keeping its value was important.

To her relief, the delegates were in agreement and the restoration of the silver standard was added to the platform. Will would have her father’s vote, for sure, and the other silver miners’ votes as well.

When they broke for lunch, the entire crowd was rejuvenated and the talk enthusiastic. Charisma smiled at Will as he led her and Thalia outside.

“They have some outstanding ideas,” Charisma said.

Will nodded. “I imagine even many Republicans would support our platform. I particularly like the part about reserving homesteads for actual settlers. Too often, the land isn’t there for the people for whom it was intended.”

“Exactly,” Thalia said. “These promises should help garner you votes.”

“I hope so.” Will pointed to a building partway down the block. “There is a good place to eat just ahead. Shall we?”

“That’s fine,” Thalia said while Charisma nodded, not caring about where she ate so much as what was to come next.

“When will they declare Mr. Grant as the candidate for governor?” Charisma longed to see the man she’d read so much about.

Will grinned. “Shortly after we resume.”

“Will we see him?”

“I would assume he’ll have to make a speech.
