Chapter Nine

As badly as Esta wanted to return to her cottage, she waited with the other people milling around the courtyard. The music stopped, and there was a drumroll. Battistoni stood in front of the band, microphone in his hand, and his sons by his side.

She hung back and discretely looked for the three Milanesi men and found them not far from her. She grabbed a champagne flute off a tray from a passing waiter and carefully sidled closer to them, hoping to learn more. However, she doubted they would say much among so many guests.

Another drumroll, and all conversation stopped. Guests looked at Battistoni with expectancy, obviously wondering about his big announcement... like her.

“Good evening, everyone. First, I’d like to welcome Emperor and Empress Zoflino. I am honored you are here to celebrate with us. Thank you all for coming. Are you having a good time?”

“Yeah! Just don’t bore us to death with long speeches!” a man shouted, and everyone laughed.

“Not to worry. I will not take long. As you all know, we have been in business for close to a hundred years. Coffee. Always coffee. I wanted to venture into something different. My scientists have been working on new products for some years now, and we are finally ready for the big reveal.” He held his hand up and motioned to someone.

Several women appeared, wheeling metal carts covered with white tablecloths. They stopped in front of Battistoni and removed the cloths simultaneously as two huge banners dropped from the ceiling, displaying images of an array of beauty products.

Battistoni continued. “As of this moment, on Earth, Xonzio, Gibos, Vnork-11, Drapunda, and Bornagul, Celestial Beauty Boutiques will be opening their doors. We have developed unique scents, beauty products, and the most important product of all, an anti-aging cream guaranteed to take ten or more years off your age. Use it, and you will see a difference in minutes. This cream was developed using an ancient formula found by my forefathers over a hundred years ago. The components in the cream are one of a kind and were difficult to obtain. But we persevered, and my scientists were finally successful. Come up to the front, examine our products, and feel free to take samples from the baskets.” He motioned again, and a woman carrying a large basket wrapped in cellophane and decorated with ribbons joined him. “Your Imperial Highness, just for you.” The woman walked to the empress and handed her the basket.

A large hologram appeared between the banners, showing the opening of the boutique on Gibos. It was fancy. The images of the interior flashed from tables laden with products to cubicles with massage tables. It switched to a woman receiving a face mask, then to another woman having the special cream applied to her face. A corner of the boutique was reserved for hairdressing needs. It appeared the boutiques would cater to all beauty-related wishes.

Battistoni held his hands up and waited until the clapping stopped. “And now for the second big reveal of the evening.
